TR: Austria
I spent a couple weeks in Feb skiing with a buddy from college in Austria. We literally had zero plan when we arrived in Munich, just a rental car and lodging for the first and last nights. Massive early snow had everything filled in and we picked up 2 overnight refills and a day of legit storm skiing. When it was all said and done we hit St. Anton/Stuben/Lech/Zurs, Montafon, Sonnenkopf, Solden and Pitztal. Several pics for your viewing pleasure:

Nice. (I was kind of hoping that that one was right off the lift and just a traverse or something...)

Must have been a F-ING blast. Wow, the terrain is stunning! I've never skied in Europe except for solden once for only two days and it was like nothing I had ever seen. I also simply cannot get enough Austrian food. Thanks for the pics!!If we're gonna wear uniforms, we should all wear somethin' different!

Fabulous report...You certainly made good time!
Obertauern is very snow-secure and I like the resort very much for skiing - but it is a bit hard to reach by public transport (at least 4 hours and 30 minutes by train and bus) and it is lacking a bit the typical Austrian village atmosphere. You might like Zell am See. Pretty, authentic, Austrian small city, lake and a nice skiing area. Slightly larger than Chamonix and Banff (been there!) Completemented with glacier-skiing at nearby Kaprun.
We are a family in Australia with relatives in Austria, we travel back regularly and go skiing, and have skied many of the ski areas near Salzburg, examples are Muhlbach Dienten, Gasteinertal, Flachau, Saalbach Hinterglem to name a few. Even if you stay in one village, depending on where you stay, there are many other resorts, villages, within a close drive, or bus ride, or a taxi transfer salzburg and many can be skied between. Some can be quite big towns, many are smaller villages with a lot of atmosphere. If you stay in a village at higher altitude, that gives you a better guarantee of being surrounded by plenty of snow adding to the atmosphere. The Hochkonig area, is one of our favourites, based around the towns of Muhlbach, Dienten, Maria Alm, Hintertal, spectacular scenery. These villages are at about 900 to 1000 metres above sea level, There are also some other ski areas/villages within an east drive, for example the Gasteinertal, Tal is the German word for valley.Last edited by unbound; 06-06-2020 at 03:42 AM.

we enjoyed Austria so much after a couple weeks in the summer, I took the sample immigration test when I returned. I've imagined it is even more spectacular in the winter, thanks for confirming that! great pics!
