Austrian Olympic Nordic Skier busted for blooding at Worlds:

The skiing world is embroiled in a "blood doping" scandal - where athletes illegally inject specially altered blood back into themselves.

Graphic footage has been leaked showing Austrian cross-country skier Max Hauke giving himself a blood transfusion.

He was one of five athletes arrested in Seefeld, Austria, which is hosting the Nordic World Ski Championships.

A police officer is also facing investigation for giving the video of Mr Hauke to the press.

The arrests have sent shockwaves through the skiing world, and have happened right in the middle of one of its biggest global competitions...

I had a Chinese friend who alerted me to this years ago. Her single anecdote was that 650.000 residents of Beijing were given three days notice to leave their homes which were going to be razed for the Olympic Village. There were no plans to house them elsewhere. No pre-planning for the move.

Here is an article that shows the scope of the actual dislocation. 1.5 million forcibly dislocated to build Beijing's Olympic Village:

BEIJING (Reuters) - Some 1.5 million residents of Beijing will be displaced by the time it hosts the 2008 Olympics, many of them evicted against their will, a rights group said on Tuesday, prompting a sharp denial by China.

The Geneva-based Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions (COHRE) said residents were often forced from their homes with little notice and little compensation, as the government embarks on a massive city redevelopment to accommodate the Games.

Sure there's a connection--greed. Greed for profits. Greed for glory. Greed for prestige. A reflection of the world as it is, and as it has always been. I'm sure the ancient Greek Olympians were cheating. I wonder how many houses were knocked down to build the Coliseum.

I also think its ridiculous that every olympics we need new venues. I get they want to spread the love, but from what i've read host cities rarely see the money come back after development. Not to mention most of these venues after the games leave are left to rot.....

Why not re-use host cities?

For years I'd thought that Scandinavian Nordic skiers were the pioneers in blood doping; long before Le Tour de France riders, and distance runners.
