Ski Lending Library: Whistler FEB 20 - MAR 1
UPDATE:
This Whistler borrowing session will end 2 days early, so now March 1 is last day to borrow in Whistler (until I come back around April 12). I decided to postpone Kicking Horse next, and instead will leave Whistler 2 days early to drive to Telluride.
------------
Simple concept: You borrow my skis for free. Then you give them back to me. No obligation to ski with me.
WHO CAN BORROW FREE SKIS FROM ME AT WHISTLER?
TGR Maggots:
My "assurance" against theft, grossly negligent or intentional damage, lawsuits, etc... is you will give me your real name and a post or message stating “I will return these skis, and I accept all risks.” That way, later if we cannot resolve a dispute, then I could "threaten" to publicly shame you on TGR with evidence. ( But c'mon, I really doubt anyone would sacrifice their multi-year TGR reputation just to steal used skis worth only a measly $100-$300. )
HOW TO BORROW FREE SKIS:
1. In advance, choose a day(s) to borrow:
- FEB 20 - MAR 3 at Whistler
2. Browse the list of skis available in the Ski Library, and choose a ski(s) to reserve for borrowing.
NOTE: Make sure that the ski’s listed BSL range and DIN range will work for your boot and preferred release value.
NOTE: If you’re not an expert on DIN release values, then ask me.
NOTE: NO OFFICIAL PROPER BOOT COMPATIBILITY for AT/PinTech/WTR boots. If your boot ain’t the good old downhill alpine boot standard (ISO 5355), then ask me.
3. Post your reservation request publicly in this thread.
Include in your post:
A) date(s)
B) ski model(s)
C) where you prefer to pickup (e.g. at a specific gondola, etc.)
D) say whether you are qualified to adjust the bindings without me present
E) your Boot Sole Length
F) your preferred DIN release value
G) any special requests
(SPECIAL PERMISSION is required BEFORE you hit rails/boxes, competitions, events like pond skims, for work (patrol, instructor, etc.), rock slides/dryland skiing (duh), etc.)
4. From there, you and I will communicate privately via PM’s or txt’s. We will finalize details like:
- time & place to meet,
- how I will get the skis back from you,
- your preferred “assurance” method…(If you refuse to tell me your real name and state “I will return these skis, and I accept all risks”, then propose something else.)
- if you’re 350-lb Shaquille O’Neal, then I gotta re-think your safety on the gear.
- I will warn you if the edges are dull, or if your mount position will end up way forward and jibby on that ski, or whatever.
- etc.
5. To CANCEL your reservation, no worries---just let me know, ideally at least 1 day in advance.

Met this cat at BBI last weekend and I gotta say, any mags interested should not hesitate to connect. Very cool, mellow and has a bunch of ripping skis with no pressure.

Pffffft. That puny list is less than half of The Arsenal (currently scattered across 4 states/provinces, slowly on it's way to Calif in stages, the long way):

Thanks, man! Great to meet you, too. JH might fit my roadtrip schedule right before BBI-Utah...we'll see.
My project to share skis has not attracted many borrowers so far. One theory is there might be more interest in Spring when conditions become repetitive, when the season is declining and people have fewer agendas, etc. We'll see.
My project to slowly move 4 carloads of skis from Whistler to Calif is right on schedule.
My project to build a ski-related website is on hold. Might work on it later during Spring/Summer skiing.
My project to ski a lot on a bunch of different skis is going great.
Not sure which stories are worth telling. How about this?

Showers since New Years Day: 3

Big thanks to Vitamin I, he handed me a tuned and freshly waxed pair of spurs and then showed me around Whistler. A solid mag and a really good skier. Good luck on your trip.

Although I'm thousands of miles away and can only wish to take advantage of this (let alone get a ski day), big ups for being so generous and willing to share with the community. Thanks!

Basically yes.
More precisely, I am in a Subaru Outback, now moving the 3rd of 4 carloads of The Arsenal mega-quiver from Whistler to their new home in Calif, and I'm taking the "long way" to Calif on each lap (hitting Epic Pass resorts), and sharing skis along the way (see the Ski Lending Library concept thread from summer).
I think you're a Calgary guy, right? I had planned to share a carload of skis at KickingHorse/Fernie this week, but instead I will hit Telluride next. New plan is to hit KH/Fernie around March 21-27...but not sure if I will bring a carload of skis from Whistler or just arrive straight from Calif with only 1 pair of skis in the car.
Currently driving to Telluride, looking like this:

That's amazing... Great trip and great idea.
You are making the right decision to skip the Canadian rockies right now... You have to go where the snow is.
Yeah, I'm in Calgary. KH in March can be awesome. Fernie is a great hill but I'm not as familiar with how things are into late March there.
Whether you bring a huge quiver or not I won't try to influence, but I will really urge you to bring at least 2 pairs with you, because KH at low tide VS high tide is quite a difference... You'll want to make sure you have something around 100 under foot, just in case.

If you're going to be in the Fernie area, keep your eyes on castle mountain as well. When it's on, it's hard to beat.

Yeah, zero questions/hassles when I crossed into USA on carload#2 & #3. But earlier, I got hassled on carload#1, had to go inside their office for 45 minutes, and in the end they just made me pay $12. Not sure how they came up with $12, but I just paid it and got out of there fast.

Whoa! Website says Castle has a 1965 T-Bar with 1700ft vert! That's core.
Yep. I removed the front passenger seat, and the 198cm RC112 skis reach into that removed-seat area. No skis can fit behind the driver seat (only about 175cm of space there), so my bed is there. Oh, plus a huge roof box on top fits long skis.

They only run that T-bar if the blue chair is down, but it is a serious thigh burner if you have to use it.
There's a lot of great terrain there and long sustained fall lines in the chutes, and the wind prone location often results in filled in and refreshed lines even without much new snow. It's a hidden gem.
