OK I get the point. I really just wanted to slip The Wall in there.
Did someone throw in Springsteen--Thunder Road and Born to Run just off the top of my head.

The Eagles were okay, but they got so played out that, unlike dozens of bands from their era, I can't say I've been tempted in the past decade or more to give their stuff a proper listen.

As for The Dude, well, at the time that film came out, that scene was funny more for the WTF quality of a guy willing to get into a dispute over a particularly inoffensive song by a band whose claim to fame was broad inoffensive appeal, than because it was an actual thing to hate the Eagles.

Maybe it isn’t technically a hiway song, but this keeps coming to mind when I read this thread. And it’s a good cruising song:

Life is old there, older than the trees, younger than the mountains, growing like a breeze

To add to Buster's line about Byrds/Burritos-style SoCal country rock from The Day...There was also a smaller spiritual/country/blues/soul rock thing - the kind of music that was all over the movie Vanishing Point.

I used to have this album when I was a kid

With just a little 'verb and natural feedback from an omni mic, Delany and Bonnie's harmonies sounded like a mass choir...And junkied-out EC didn't have to do much to fill out a sound with Dave Mason playing rhythm...

[Delany Bramlet wrote a few major tunes while he was at it]

Then EC went back to Blighty and spread the gospel, even getting clean for a little while...

Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

My take is there's basically two really good songs in this thread:

    1.

(I'll give you Dylan if you really want it, I know he wrote the song)

    and 2.

And 2 is a lot better than 1. Fuck that's a good song.
