PPL was a little later, but Fuller was part of that LA country tribe. He also sang for Little Feat for a minute after LG's demise.

I think I was remembering...or were we too wasted?
Anyway, yeah, you might hate the Byrds, but Sweetheart was a watermark for all that stuff.

And Zappa gave LG his first exposure.

I don’t know why there should be, but I think there is a lot of very good music in this thread… Along with some not very good music

In November 1968, George joined Zappa's Mothers of Invention as rhythm guitarist and nominal lead vocalist; he can be heard on Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Burnt Weeny Sandwich, You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 1, You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 4 and the first disc of You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore, Vol. 5. During this period, he absorbed Zappa's autocratic leadership style and avant garde-influenced conceptual/procedural-oriented compositional methods. He earned his first production credit (in conjunction with Zappa and Russ Titelman) on Permanent Damage, an album recorded by "groupie group" The GTOs. George later asserted that "he performed no real function in the band" and left the group in May 1969 under nebulous circumstances. GTOs member Pamela Des Barres has claimed that George was fired by the abstemious Zappa for smoking marijuana, while he claimed at a 1975 Little Feat concert that he was fired because he "wrote a song ["Willin'"] about dope."[3] On the other hand, biographer Mark Brend asserts that Zappa "liked the song" but "thought there was no place for it in the Mothers' set"; George himself alternatively claimed that "it was decided that I should leave and form a band" by mutual agreement. George also claimed to have played uncredited guitar on Hot Rats.[4]

When I applied for a job at Cellophane Square, they asked me what kind of music I liked. I told them I liked good music, not bad music. They offered me a job, but I got paid more at the Last Exit On Brooklyn as the Soup Chef. By the mid seventies I was pretty burned out on big radio rock.

I always thought the Eagles were ok, I guess I was young enough to barely miss some of the heavy radio play that might have killed them for others. But I like lots of various music that I only listen to a time or two a year. I just hate arguing or even "spirited debate" so I never mentioned when it came up several times before. I feel the same way about Clapton for the record. Super talented dude, never my fav.

So with that in mind, I was going to post this during the Paradise fire in an introspective way, but didn't want anyone to take it wrong. In everything I read here and elsewhere about the fire never saw this, maybe I just missed it. Thought it was poignant to the fire and the state of the US. Vibes to those with friends in the fire.
Disclaimer, not sure who wrote it, but it's an Eagles song to me.
Eta, never really liked the music of this song that much but lyrics were notable.

    Last Resort:
She came from Providence, the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea

She heard about a place, people were smilin'
They spoke about the red man's way, how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand or a place to hide

Down in the crowded bars, out for a good time
Can't wait to tell you all what it's like up there
And they called it paradise, I don't know why
Somebody laid the mountains low while the town got high

Then the chilly winds blew down, across the desert
Through the canyons of the coast to the Malibu
Where the pretty people play, hungry for power
To light their neon way and give them things to do

Some rich men came and raped the land, nobody caught 'em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes and Jesus, people bought 'em
And they called it paradise, the place to be
They watched the hazy sun sinking in the sea

You can leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina
Just like the missionaries did so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign 'Jesus is coming'
Brought the white man's burden down, brought the white man's reign

Who will provide the grand design, what is yours and what is mine?
'Cause there is no more new frontier, we have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds
In the name of destiny and in the name of God

And you can see them there on Sunday morning
Stand up and sing about what it's like up there
They called it paradise, I don't know why
You call some place paradise, kiss it goodbye

"nebulous circumstances" being the key phrase in the story....

I have on old pal who worked as Frank's personal assistant in the 80's. He was by all accounts - however wondrous - a cantankerous dude with his band. The Buddy Rich of the rock generation. I suspect the firing due to stonerizm story has the best legs. But who the fuck knows.

If we're talking about highway songs there's the entire Bill Kirchen Dieselbilly oeuvre, starting of course with Hot Rod Lincoln.

wtfk indeed. But yeah, FZ was known as a tyrant when it came to his band and drugs in particular.

I always liked Buddy Rich's take on country music.
