I watched the 2008 Champions League Final (Man U Vs Chelsea) at the famed George & Dragon pub in Seattle.

Some overly belligerent oik wearing a Chelsea shirt was swearing and cursing at every single thing that happened in the game, mostly completely missing what had actually happened that he was angry about.. even disputing simple, obvious throw in calls.

Several approaches were made to ask him to chill out a bit.

Eventually I asked him how long he'd been a Chelsea fan. "Forever!" he said... beating his fist against the team's crest on his shirt.

What city are they from then I asked.

    "Dunno... Chelsea I guess?"

    Wanker quietened down thereafter.

As a full-grown Euro from a country with a bunch of mediocre football teams and very few really good players, I have to say you are ruining it for the rest of us. Americans should not like football. It has no part of your culture. Stick to American football and baseball. Maybe hockey.

Football is much like baseball. It's fucking boring. We stick to our boring stuff, you stick to yours. Decent sport to get drunk and watch or get drunk to play, but that's it. Drunk baseball actually sounds like fun.

I don't know why, but this past couple of years' worth of football interest in the States has tickled me a bit. Can you people not like a sport without extreme amounts of marketing and money behind it? If the American football franchises were more inclined to allow fighting, shorten the periods into 20 minutes (maybe times three, allows for nice ad breaks) and severely reduce the area of the fields, I'd subscribe, if only to see sellout has-beens from Europe get their shit kicked. America fucked it up, though. You went the way of the old world football teams (or franchises, if you prefer), when you should've gone full retard.

A wanker should be allowed to be called a wanker on either side of the Atlantic, though.

    Ha, no.
Was over for a good friends 50th, he is a West Ham fan. Spent a lot of the weekend with my old flatmate that grew up in the Salford Quays & lives in Staleybridge now . Some of those comments MAY have come from him.

You just might be. Then again, we should not be defined by what we like. I like football, too.

    its kinda fascinating for me

Grew up in the 70s with NASL & playing soccer ( badly) when it was the "next big thing" slowly died nationally but remained a big kid sport & huge in High schools ( Tennessee & Utah at least) in the 80s

then in the 90s, I lived in UK and caught the United bug from roomie mentioned above ( also learned a lot about the "culture" of supporters living in Glasgow) came back to the US just in time for the 94 World Cup, this had to be it for Soccer in the US right?

    NO

    pro league floundered
When United won the treble in 99 I had to read about it in the back sports page of a New York Times while working in Aspen Luckily they were delivered to the hotel I worked @ by 7am.

Football/soccer in the US wasnt going anywhere.

2000s brought the start of MLS and some success in some cities. I was in Salt Lake and went to a few matches for Real Salt Lake @ the U of U stadium, it was alright. Then they built the stadium on the ass end of the valley and I lost interest. they seem to have done well though. MLS is a big deal in a lot of cities here.
Tipp and I had a blast with our sons @ the DC United game last summer. Still not common to find on TV.

the growth of the interst in the Premeirre and Champions League has been pretty amazing recently.

When I first moved to NYC in 06, It was awesome because I could actually see most United matches at a nearby pub. Most Champions League matches could be seen at a pub near work. Still couldnt watch at home and sometimes had to pay for FA cup. Being a very global city there was a fair amount of interest, but mostly expat Brits and other Europeans and Africans that moved here for work.

I have watched the majority of United's matches over the last 13 years and it is amazing how much the US based fan base of the PL has grown. NBC taking over the rights has made it so easy to watch, but I still like to go down my local here in Stamford, even though its full of wankers supporting Arsenal.

^^^Fucking NASL in the 70s was the shit! I went to tons of Minnesota Kicks games 78-81ish.. Played on the Varsity team in 9th grade, burned out on it for a couple years literally, then picked it back up some in college intramural and bar leagues through my 20s. Coached my kids' teams from U6 through U15. Now totally retired, but still enjoy a good match from time to time. Not the guy who blabs about EPL or other leagues non stop but I get it..

Personally, I think the greatest moment in the history of the game was when Renaldo and Real dropped the Copa del Rey under their team bus..

    Good one!

What the hell use were all those white walker Lieutenants? They just stood there and watched like Ashley Young while Arya ran through and killed the Night King, who gave it up like David De Gea giving away that howler to Chelsea
