    Salomon MTN rear pin adjust...

First time self mounting a pin binding, have mounted over 30 other skis prior to this.

The manual isnt really clear on this, how far should the pins go into the boot?

The heel gap should be 4mm. They provide a 4mm red plastic spacer with the brakes. The brake-less version comes with a powder leash that's 4mm thick to achieve the same purpose.

What DtEW said is laid out clearly in the installation instructions, so I think that counts as public knowledge (especially since the instructions are free to download).

This thread and Bushwacka's pretty oblivious observation is Exhibit 956745326 in why mounting your own skis is sometimes (many times) not recommended if you don't know how to search JONG

It's not public knowledge because there ain't one standard gap for all tech bindings. Each one has its own gap depending on the functionality of the heel and length of the pins. Anywhere from 5.5mm to a kiss gap.

Pretty clever of Solly to make the gap the same as the leash.
