A few years ago we stayed at a motel and I convinced the owner to let me wax skis in his laundry room basement ....6:30 in the morning and I set off the smoke alarms...
Now whenever we drive by the place Sprite asks me if we should stop so I could wax my skis...then she laughs...we drive by this place a lot..I dunno she get's a kick out of it..still
zero complaints... I basically had a tuning bench in our dining room the past two seasons... the floor, vintage 70's linoleum, got slippery yeah and a little trashed, the benefits of not beginning the new wood floor install...that linoleum sure shined after a little buffing though..

learn more efficient waxing technique if you are getting wax "everywhere".

I'm messy but it doesn't help that I'm doing a few sets of skis at a time.

OP, sounds like you are using WAY too much wax. Using less saves material, cost, scraping and mess.

Check out our tuning tips on Hot Touching and Efficient waxing.

For zero drips, touch the wax to the iron and apply a little wax with iron. Rinse and repeat until you have a thin coat. Then work it in.

I agree too much wax. Crayon on the wax. Warm the ski tip (or tail) for a few seconds with your iron, then move the iron towards the other end of the ski with one hand as you crayon on the wax with the other. You will have applied enough wax to get a little bit of scraping. Mineral spirits or floor stripper will take off any residue, although the smell might bother your wife more than the wax.

Dripping wax on a garage floor doesn't make it slippery. Any drips are easily removed. It's brushing that makes it slick as the wax dust settles. Brush em somewhere else or do what I did and set your bench up by the door and run a fan when brushing.

I'm looking for ways to keep wax off of the garage floor when I wax. I get wax everywhere and the wife says the garage floor is too slippery after I'm done waxing. I try to clean the wax off the floor but you guys know a light layer of wax will stay on the concrete floor. I can lay down a plastic sheet but that can tear from moving the bench I would think. I've tried a big moving blanket and that was almost just as messy. When I tried to pick up the blanket wax shavings got on the floor still. I've tried a shop-vac and even used base cleaner and brake cleaner on the floor. Huge pain the ass.

What can I do to avoid wax on the floor?

Cardboard will work too, old box- hot water tank, big screen TV, refrigerator, or anything of similar length. Place it down, wax, sweep it up with a broom when done, and you can even then pick it up and store it in the garage when not waxing. Get a small amount on the floor and scraper or a small bit of wax remover (that is the only reason really for the most part to have wax remover as I hardly ever use it on ski bases.)

And you probably need to crayon wax into the ski- touch the iron for a second and rub the wax bar over the bottom of the ski for a cheap cleaning wax. Then crayon the wax you will be using for final round after you do the cleaning scraping...

I have seen also like described above- shops or a dedicated wax bench where they have either a few long trays (2 old rain gutters work with a plastic or drop cloth between them if you have snowboard attached and mounted under the vises or T bars with clamps...

Get a really big canvas drop cloth, one that can go all the way to the back of your bench and extend as to give you several feet to work.

You can vacuum up your wax afterwards but I would just pull up the drop cloth and spring clamp the edges to your bench top. Kinda like a reverse tablecloth.

Blue tarp - wax doesn't really stick to it. Fold it inwards and shake it out on into the trash (or lawn, etc.).

I've used the blue tarp in the past (as well as canvas drop cloths), but now I just let it fall on the concrete (garage floor) and sweep it up afterwards - gets like 99.9% in under a minute. But then, I wax just enough to cover every dry part of the base, but no more, so that scraping just spills a small amount of shavings. Sounds like you are dripping way too much wax; try to use the minimum amount you can (takes practice).

I also realize that I'm not an FIS racer, so I don't need to get too anal retentive about scraping. If I'm going to apply skins to the new wax job, I'm way more careful not to leave thick spots (that will foul skin glue), otherwise I figure it'll smooth out after a few runs (but I am careful to clean the edges thoroughly).

P.S. crayoning then ironing sounds like too much work. Just learn to drip the proper amount (JMO)
