If your creating smoke whilst waxing:

    1) The wax job will be less effictive (if it's smoking, the wax is degrading for sure)

    2) You are breathing quite toxic fumes (ESPECIALLY if you're using any sort of flouro wax, but even smoke from traditional ski wax is quite toxic)

I used a thrift store iron for many years, and eventually broke down and bought a non-fancy, Toko waxing iron. Night and day. That thing is so steady (and the temp settings click in, so it never goes out accidentally), I never, ever have smoke anymore. Set it so the wax melts and does not smoke - ideal.

I had a shitty clothes iron that would smoke so turn it down

then its too cold so I turn it up

then it smokes so I turn it down

with more delicate XC race ski bases there was real danger of bubbling the ptex which i am sure I did

the real wax iron is something I wished I bought yars ago ... life is short

I'm gonna use one of these cloths or the tarp. And I'll back off the wax some.

I feel you on this, I have to wax in my kitchen since I live in an apartment. Almost smashed my head in the middle of the night getting water from my socks slipping on wax brushing.
TLDR; Ski faster. Quit breathing. Don't crash.

Thanks to this thread, I bought this model:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O5GG6VC/
... and now for the first time since, well, since we bought our new house in 2006, my workroom floor is clear of wax!
(But don't worry, my ski season is still in progress, just that the skis I'm still using are out in the PNW awaiting my return, so no more waxing & scraping in my house for this season.)
