Yeah, well Missoula has twice as many people as 20 years ago and still has the exact same number of chairlifts (2). Do the math.

Puerto Varas (or Puerto Montt) would be pretty sweet.

Young man (I assume you are a man because most women have the good sense to not post here, except KQ because for some reason no one messes with her), it's time to educate you on life. Life is a tradeoff--not crowded, good jobs, access to skiing and biking, reasonable male/female ratio, and affordable--you have to give up some of these to get others. I suggest you meditate on your priorities and values, or find a smoking hot, rich woman with a private jet who will support you and your fantasies.

Sounds like the story of U.S. infrastructure (both public and private), in general.

You pretty much described Spokane. Not the glamour of the other cities, but decent cost of living, decent career opportunities, rafting, paddling, climbing, mountain biking basically in town plus lots of good stuff out of town close.

Other than being really crowded and having poor access to lift-served skiing...

Still - could be worse. Like Houghton.

As a life-long Spokanite, I have my bias and I didn't want to necessarily say anything since so many people here tend to have other opinions of Spokane. However, I agree with Falcon3. When I read your post, my thought was that you were describing Spokane. Just my $.02

I believe investing in collective, community owned ski resorts is the answer of the future. Get a large group of successful friends, figure out permitting, and purchase several rope tows or a small chairlift. Bootpack to the steep goods. Hire a small patrol for avvy control, or do it yourself.

Before you seriously consider a move to Santa Fe/northern NM, read this carefully:

Short version: it’s not basically Colorado.
