"... Enjoy yourselves, keep your brain in your head and your head firmly attached to your body, the body active and alive, and I promise you this much: I promise you this one sweet victory over our enemies, over those deskbound people with their hearts in a safe deposit box and their eyes hypnotized by desk calculators. I promise you this: you will outlive the bastards." – Edward Abbey

At 10 frames a second should I choose the image with the pole dragging behind or leading the way?

That's what I was going to say. With a minimum of 7fps these days, photogs have a LOT to choose from. They're just picking what looks right to them.

Here's one that somehow came out OK without the exaggerated pole plant:

One of my favorites without a pole plant at all:

And one with a semi-exaggerated pole plant:

My pole is faster than your one, but I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

skiers and photogs used to joke about it as "Alta Arm" round the turn of the century, but then I was living & skiing in Utah and many of them were too.....

I do think a lot of it is a nod, conscious or not, to those shots of Cohen, et al that have been so Iconic over the years

My contribution from 2 weeks ago... one millisecond later and there'd be even more pole on display.

My contribution to this epic thread. Not super aggressive, but still showing off the pole.

Technically, the pole isn't planted in bottomless powder.
