Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. and ANNIE LEE COOPER.
    .
In 1965, in Selma, Alabama, Annie Lee Cooper stood in line to register to vote. Dallas County Sheriff Jim Clark prodded her in the neck with a billy club and Annie turned and hit the sheriff in the jaw, knocking him to the ground at which point deputies wrestled Annie to the ground and Clark continued to beat her. She was taken to jail and held for 11 hours during which she sang spirituals before she was released and following the incident she succeeded to register to vote in Alabama. Sheriff Jim Clark was the same man who ordered the Dallas County Police to charge the marchers eventually led by Dr .Martin Luther King in the famous march from Selma to Montgomery that same year. In the film depicting this march, one of the most important of the Civil Rights Movement, Oprah Winfrey, portrays Annie Lee Cooper. When I visited Annie in Selma, in 2006, she spoke with so much love and admiration for Dr. King, who in this photograph, she held so close to her heart.
Annie lived to be 100 years old and passed away in 2010. I dedicate this photograph to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to Annie Lee Cooper, and to all those who struggle for respect and dignity for everyone!
    David Turnley, 2006. Selma, Alabama.

Otis was amazing. People know him by "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" but that ain't nothing compared to his body of work prior to that posthumous hit.

Here's a good piece if anyone is interested about a topic that is still current - voting rights (unbelievable, right?):
