1/18/19 Utah Avy Death - No Beacons
Sad to read about this avy death in Utah on Friday. Preaching to the choir here, but please, wear your beacons

First fatality in three years. Tragic.

Tragic and preventable are the words you were looking for.

What a bummer. Feel sorry for the family and friends of this guy. Please travel in the BC prepared. Sounds like many mistakes were made that were preventable.
SaltyUte, you can edit your post so you don’t come off as such a dick.

To be fair, I was responding to your first post.
And I agree that if any good can come from events like this it's awareness and prevention.

It's worth noting that even if this party had had beacons the results may have been the same because the skier that lived had gotten so far ahead of his partner that by the time he skinned back up a lot of time had passed.....

some say whoever goes last is basically skiing solo.

At the avy refresher I did this year they were talking about quantifying how many fatalities are "effectively alone", something like 70% of those killed are out of sight or effective range of their partners to be rescued, thus effectively alone. A bigger problem with sleds but this certainly fits the mold.

Also something I think about often and try to figure out the best way to mitigate in avy terrain. I've definitely had pangs of terror watching a partner come down and thinking about if the slope were to slide, how long would it take me to get to them?
((. The joy I get from skiing...

((. That's worth living for.

If the guy who skied off without watching his partner stopped mid-run, there might have been two dead people. He absolutely should hav stopped somewhere in view of the run of course, but it's interesting how that mistake (this one time) might have saved him. Or not, who knows.

So what were these guys doing ski touring, with no beacons? I dont get it. You have the gear, why not the transceiver?

Apparently there was an additional beacon in his pack, turned off...
They were getting a weak or erratic signal, maybe his beacon was running out of juice?
Either way wtf.

Yes you would think they would have written the report to include that. They never explain the weak/erratic beacon signal though?
