Nothing like Ken’s posts but I had a great day with a local mag up in Yellowstone exploring some “new-to -me” water. Nothing big but saw bears, osprey, eagles and had a ton of fun. Before heading down canyon I made a little stop and was rewarded with these 19” bruisers. A lot of fun on a small rod and skinny, but fast water.

^^^Nice. I bet that first one didn’t jump, as it’s got just enough cutthroat in it, so it won’t.

It didn’t even try. The other tried but I was able to keep him down. However the several 13” rainbows I caught in between these two spent more time in the air than in the water. Good fun!

    Wow... that’s fuge .
Just got back. Great day. Caught fish on nyphs, drys, swinging wets, and one on a streamer.
    No toads.
Missed so many fish. I think my guide thought I was a total douche at one point and I handed my rod to him. He managed to miss the next three takes which made me feel better and he swore he hadn’t missed 3 in a row in forever. I’ve got it on video... not sure what the hell they were doing. Basically jumping over the dryfly rigs.
Ton of fun. Still caught a lot of fish despite no pigs.
Might post some fish pics when my guide sends them...I can’t find time to take photos of fish.

I did complete my goal for this week. Caught a native brook, a smallmouth, and rainbow and brown. Was a good week.

Beautiful shots. Glad you grabbed some. Post up some. The river is on fire right now. I'm not a fly swatter, but if you want to focus on big fish, you need streamers on the lower end, from Big Springs on down.

We went over to the Watauga to find some bigger fish! Had an event that included breaking off the key in the boat, so we had to hot wire the switch to get back upriver. Then the massive storm rolled through on our way home.

Out of curiosity, who was your guide? Some are better than others, and I know a few of the really good ones. Oldest daughter works a shift or two at the South Holston River Lodge, and they have some of the top noch guides there.

It’s time for some PNW salt water fly action. As in cold water, wading deep in the surf and casting hard while the ocean is trying to fuck you up fly action.
We did a family trip out to Kalaloch campground on the WA coast. It’s the part of Olympic National Park that is on the beach. I read some good things about the fly potential of this area and one of my long time goals was to get some surf perch action so I decided to bring my 8wt rig out. I had tried for surf perch a few times when we lived in NorCal on the San Mateo and Santa Cruz coasts but always came up empty. On Saturday afternoon we went out to Beach 4 north of the campground so the kiddos could play in the sand and some of the others in our group could dip net for smelt. On hitting the beach, it was clear this was a hot spot. 4-5 surf casters, another half dozen dipping for smelt, a squad of pelicans, three seals hitting the break hard, and even a reported sighting of dolphins in the surf zone made it clear the smelt run was on here and everybody was getting into the act. As usual, I was the only fly caster. I put on a green & white clouser and waded out to near the break. A few minutes of nothing and I switched to a pink sparkly shrimp looking fly. A few casts into that and bam, nailed my first Red Tailed Surf Perch. Not too big, probably about a pound, but a nice hard fighter. I got another hard strike a few minutes later but lost that one. I actually kept it and grilled it over the campfire. Maybe a little mushy flesh texture but really good tasting.

Striper was from the Cumberland River just outside of Nashville. Back in late April. But, yes, the lower end of the Watauga is loaded at the moment. Trying to get away from bathwater into some low 60's.

sweet. I'm in Nashville, but haven't given the striper thing a whirl yet. I was up your way a couple of weeks ago for the first time in 10 years. I grew up about a mile from the SoHo dam, but rarely make it back these days.

Whatever you do don’t chuck flys at them. They hate that. Plus you’ll never be the same after.

Josh is heading back to Texas tomorrow. One last fishing trip. He is focused on personal bests. Prior to last night, best striper for him was 27. He had the rod in his hand and landed this 35 pounder. Now says next year he will get a 40. Hate to tell him it took me 5 years to get one.
