Ski Lending Library: Summit County, JAN 12-21, 2019

UPDATE: These Summit County dates are over. Will likely return around late March.
    Next stops for borrowing are:
    - Crested Butte area: JAN 22-24
    - SLC area: JAN 25-27

    ---------

Simple concept: You borrow my skis for free. Then you give them back to me.

BACKGROUND: See the initial discussion at the summer thread.

    PROOF OF CONCEPT:

Let's see if we can refine the procedures along the way. No worries if no interested borrowers during this JAN 12-21 trial—-at a minimum, I am motivated to try again for BBI Alpental, BBI Utah, and a 2nd chance for Summit County in spring sunny conditions.

Or, if this trial succeeds, then maybe a Summit County local(s) would volunteer to keep it going after JAN 21 while I’m away. A successful Proof of Concept here would inspire me to also try it at other locations on my extended roadtrip (multiple laps through SLC, Tahoe, Whistler, CO, plus one drive-by through Revy/KH/Fernie).

The skis will be at a Silverthorne storage unit, or I can meet you at a place convenient for both of us-—ideally not far from an EpicPass resort (Vail, Breck, A-Basin, Keystone, BeaverCreek). I am available to do this every day during the JAN 12-21 trial.

The procedures below will change every time we discover a way to improve it.

THE LIBRARIAN AT SUMMIT COUNTY BRANCH:

Me (Vitamin I), in Summit County for only JAN 12-21

WHO CAN BORROW FREE SKIS FROM THE SUMMIT COUNTY BRANCH?

Anyone who can provide sufficient assurances that you won't screw me via theft, grossly negligent or intentional damage, lawsuits, etc.

    1) MAGGOTS:
For now, let's say you only need a significant history &/or reputation on TGR. Easy.
And my "assurance" is you will give me your real name and a post or message stating “I will return these skis, and I accept all risks.” That way, later if we cannot resolve a dispute, then I could "threaten" to publicly shame you on TGR with evidence. ( But c'mon, I really doubt anyone would sacrifice their multi-year TGR reputation just to steal used skis worth only a measly $100-$300. )

    2) LURKERS / GENERAL PUBLIC:
For now, let's say any ski industry employees (lifties, Ski Patrol, resort employees, ski shop employees, etc.) can borrow. And my "assurance" is you tell me in advance how I can rat you out to your employer if you steal my skis.

HOW TO BORROW FREE SKIS FROM THE SUMMIT COUNTY BRANCH:

    1. In advance, choose a day(s) within JAN 12-21, when you want to borrow skis in the Summit County area. The Reservations Calendar shows when each ski is unavailable.

    2. Browse the list of skis available at the Summit County Branch of the Library, and choose a ski to reserve for borrowing.
NOTE: Make sure that the ski’s listed BSL range and DIN range will work for your boot and preferred release value.
NOTE: If you’re not an expert on DIN release values, then ask the Librarian (me).
NOTE: NO OFFICIAL PROPER BOOT COMPATIBILITY for AT/PinTech/WTR boots. If your boot ain’t the good old downhill alpine boot standard (ISO 5355), then ask the Librarian (me). The list of skis displays only whether or not Toe Height is Adjustable, which MIGHT fit SOME non-alpine boots with good retention---BUT NO SLIDER AFD'S in the current collection, so non-alpine boots WON'T RELEASE RELIABLY SAFELY. You tell me in advance, and you accept all risks there.

    3. Post your reservation request publicly in this thread. (a.k.a. "Place a Hold")
    Include in your post:
    A) date(s)
    B) ski model
    C) where you prefer to pickup (e.g. at a ski resort, at Silverthorne storage, etc.)
    D) say whether you are qualified to adjust the bindings without me present
    E) your BSL
    F) your preferred DIN release value
    G) any special requests (SPECIAL PERMISSION is required BEFORE you hit rails/boxes, competitions, any events like pond skims, for work (patrol, steeps instructor, etc.), rock slides/dryland skiing (duh), etc.)

    4. From there, you and I will communicate privately via PM’s or txt’s or whatever. We will finalize details like:
    - time & place to meet,
    - how I will get the skis back from you, (e.g. maybe leave them in a specific ski rack at the resort for me to pickup after lifts close. Other ideas?)
    - your preferred “assurance” method…(If you refuse to tell me your real name and state “I will return these skis, and I accept all risks”, then propose something else.)
    - if you’re 350-lb Shaquille O’Neal, then I gotta re-think your safety on the gear.
    - I will warn you if the edges are dull, or if your mount position will end up way forward and jibby on that ski, or whatever.
    - etc.

    5. After I confirm your reservation, I will update the list in this thread, to mark the ski as RESERVED for your dates.

    6. To CANCEL your reservation, no worries---just let me know, ideally at least 1 day in advance.

    7. After your borrowing experience, please post in this thread about:
    - any issues with the gear (e.g. needs wax, needs sharper edges, new damage, etc.),
    - feedback about your experience
    - propose improvements, or ways that this model could be extended to more areas/more lenders/etc.

Incredible thing you're doing here and incredible collection you've got! Would love to ski with you in addition to taking advantage of your generosity and happy to buy you a beer/herb/lunch/etc. Wondering if I can reserve two pairs of skis for Jan 14 or am I being greedy? I will return these skis and I accept all risks.

    A) Jan 14, 2019
    B) 188 Rossi RC112 (first choice) 187 Blizzard Argos (second choice)
    C) Would prefer to pick up and drop off at Arapahoe Basin
    D) I can adjust DIN but wouldn't trust myself with BSL adjustments.
    E) 326mm
    F) 8.5
    G) None

    RESERVATION APPROVED.
Yeah, 2 skis is OK. The more the merrier.
Yeah, let's do face-to-face at A-Basin for this one, and ski a couple laps together (or more).
NOTE: For the Argos, you'll need to choose to accept the risk that its DIN goes down to only 9, so we can't set it to your 8.5. (The risk of that 0.5 DIN difference is very small, IMO.)

I will send you a PM for details.

This time, the border officers didn't hassle me at all for bringing 29 pairs of skis.

Seems like borrowing skis off the rack at the resort and then returning them would be a lot simpler. (See "skis stolen at Northstar thread")

That Vitamin I is willing to set this up, deliver, pickup et al is just plain awesome. Acts of generosity like this don’t come around very much anymore. Props to you!! (Longing for the early days of yesteryear (Old PowMag forum) when random acts of kindness ;like this, were more prevalent.

Thanks for the generous offer, but no thanks---I already have more than enough rooftop space to exceed the weight limit when filled with skis. I have a heavy 21 c.f. Yakima Skybox. In hindsight, the slightly smaller 18 c.f. Skybox would have been better (would still fit 10+ huge skis, but the box itself is significantly lighter).

My sleeping area is not so tight on most days. At Whistler & Colorado, I have storage units, so I keep the car empty during long stays at those 2 locations. Also, the car will be empty every time I drive from Tahoe to Whistler (because one longterm goal is to move all skis, one carload at a time, from Whistler to Tahoe...but moving them the" long way" via SLC, via Colorado, via Canadian Rockies, etc.)

For Seattle area, my tentative schedule is to just drive right through Seattle northbound 2 more times with an empty car (no skis to share), but also I will bring a full carload southbound to BBI Alpental from Whistler.

I take from this that the 29 skis are just a small fraction of the quiver? I think you might qualify to be on that “Hoarders” TV show.

Yeah, my complete quiver hoard is around 86 pairs. About half as many as powderoflavancher's quiver.

Lists updated above with whether or not Toe Height is Adjustable to POSSIBLY fit SOME non-alpine boots.

That info tells people if their non-alpine AT/PinTech/WTR boot even has ANY CHANCE to fit with decent retention for skiing----but no slider AFD's in the current collection, so non-alpine boots will NOT release reliably safely. I'm not comfy with you taking that risk, but if you convince me that you ski your AT boots on static-AFD Salomon 916's all the time anyway, or whatever, then I guess you can borrow my skis and you accept the risks and I will just accept that I'm not comfy.

Thanks for the offer! ...but I won't make it to Loveland tomorrow. I'm at Vail now, then tomorrow night only as far as Silverthorne HQ.

My man! Love this!! I might know a few folks that would take advantage of something like this in the Tahoe area.
Appreciate your generosity! Keep up the stoke!

No one is skiing the other 2 pairs of Blizzards tomorrow (Zeus 185 & Zeus 194). I marked all those 3 Blizzards as "reserved", because those 3 pairs require the IQ Max swappable binding plate, and I have only 1 binding plate set up and ready to go right now. That plate can be swapped between those 3 skis, but only 1 of those 3 pairs can be skied at a time.

Today I skied the 185 Zeus far half a day, then swapped the plate to the Argos 187 and skied that. Both were good, but I prefer the Zeus 185 for its higher stability (and is actually longer, despite Blizzard's wacky numbers in the model names).

Just wanted to follow up and say that Vitamin I is the man! Had a blast ripping around A-Basin yesterday with him on his RC112s and Argos. Thanks again for making this happen!
