Can't help with the autopsy, but there was a schizophrenic back in the 70's I think who castrated himself in attempt to effect a cure. When that didn't work he tried to remove his adrenal glands but after successfully opening his belly he had too much pain retracting his liver so he presented himself to the University of Florida Gainesville hospital to be sewed back up.

A surgeon I know did his own vasectomy; he was in North Dakota at the time and the only alternative was the local vet, which made him nervous for obvious reasons.

If you're in Washington there's a good chance you could compost yourself when your done with the autopsy:

Washington could become the first state to legalize human composting

Washington residents "are very excited about the prospect of becoming a tree or having a different alternative,” state Sen. Jamie Pedersen said.

So nobody performs their own autopsy? WTF. Do we have to outsource everything? Are the days of handling your own shit over? Are we as humans now so reliant on having others perform everyday mundane tasks that we can't even inspect a corpse? For shame.

I am going to bring back the old timey, artisan autopsy. Look for my shop in Brooklyn, "A Bespoke Autopsy".

Why do they call it AUTOpsy if you don't do it on yourself? "Auto" as in "autoeroticism"--it's not some pathologist whacking you off.

Like, does the body need to be dead? I mean, after the process it probably will be relatively dead?
It feels somehow a bit redundant to kill when it will be killed nevertheless. That is like...an overkill.

It's all about being cost effective nowadays, you know?

    One tiger...or polar bear. Done.

Sent from my iPad using TGR Forums
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

Pernkopf's Atlas of Anatomy, generally considered to have the best illustrations of any anatomy atlas, was done by doing dissections on live concentration camp victims. Some people in my med school class actually bought the damn thing. (Sorry to post a downer in an otherwise slightly funny thread.)

Isn't there a rumor that Ben Franklin experimented on and dissected corpses (or live people?) and they found a shitload of human bones buried under a place where he lived??

What I want to know is why do they call an animal autopsy a necropsy?

Because vets make a point of calling anatomic structures and procedures by different names than human physicians do.

If you've killed yourself, an autopsy is redundant as you already know the cause of death.

Unless you're already deceased, it's self-surgery. Minus a diagnosis, it's exploratory. Anybody need a full set of "The CIBA Collection of Netter's Medical Illustrations"?
Scientists now have decisive molecular evidence that humans and chimpanzees once had a common momma and that this lineage had previously split from monkeys.

How would you know if you haven’t tried?

Autopsy means "see for oneself", so you could open up a person or animal to see what the matter is and it wouldn't be a necropsy if the subject wasn't dead (yet). I'd rather ski though.
