I haven't done LSD in years. Is this a green run or a blue?

I feel like I should like Aesop Rock more than I do. Just can't get into the whole over-enunciated thing. I dig Tobacco though. Especially some of his older stuff.

    I like him well enough.
As with most MCs, I find that it all depends on the beat rolling underneath his rhymes. Sometimes I dig him, other times (if the beat isn't to my liking, for example) I find myself kind of shaking my head.
But, again, this is the case with a lot of MCs. If they have the right beat to accompany their flow and delivery it makes all the difference in the world.
Of course there are those MCs who can rock anything at any time, even a cappella, and still come of solid. But for the most part pretty much every MC I've ever dug really needs that sublime beat backing their lyrical discharge.
Trippy visuals in your videos help, too.

Thanks for this. Never heard of Tobacco, some of his solo stuff sounds like the Tron soundtrack distorted by drugs. I'll have to give him a listen more.

Also check out Black Moth Super Rainbow (https://blackmothsuperrainbow.bandcamp.com/), the "band" that Tobacco fronts. Dark lyrics surrounded by cool electronic atmosphere. They put on a nifty live show, too.

BTW dookey, I'm digging this thanks for the post.

I haven't really sought out hip hop in a long time. I hate to compare but it reminds me a bit of Infesticons and some other 2000's stuff I forget ATM. Gun Hill Rd is one of my top 10 albums of all time. (its probably a lot more sample or loop heavy than Aesop Rock or Tobacco but still...)

    Good stuff!

Shit, now I'mma have to dig up my Mike Ladd CDs!

FWIW, I don't stay too up on new rap either, but I am on the Rhymesayers emailing list, so twas they who hipped me to the Malibu Ken.
I should stay a bit more up on new stuff considering that I spent close to 20 years writing about rap music and hip-hop culture for a variety of magazines back in the day.
