Repair this coreshot myself or take it to the shop?

As the title says, it's about 2 to 2.5 inches long and I can see the metal in the bottom of the gouge. Best way to repair it?

Too many of these threads lately.

I'm going to say this: it depends on you....if you're the kind of human being who wants to fix things, you'll find a way. If you're the kind of human being who pays others to fix your broken things, you'll find a way.

This has been covered to death, search that shit.
Base weld is the best way to fix it. If you have to ask, just take them to The Ski Shack in Hayden. Ren and company will fix it up right.

Flowing Alpy probably has a solution for this damage, maybe he'll chime in.

Sintered base patch by far best way to fix that(other than what the baker suggests)
Metal grip/base weld easier. Not near as bomber, but will work great

    Core shot base repair

For this demonstration, a previously filled core shot was cut out.

Tape around repair area. Cut out loose material, sand, clean with base cleaner and wipe dry.

Warm repair area with 100°C iron on Teflon sheet, heat gun or hair dryer.

Melt metal grip onto core with tip of iron.

Let metal grip cool & harden, trim, sand & clean.

Feeding welding rod to iron tip and smearing into gouge.

View of soldering tip over weld and welding rod.

Weld to above base with no depressions. Let cool and harden.

Lightly and repeatedly cut excess material with panzer file. Increase pressure as necessary.

View of weld trimmings and progress.

Trimmed to base with panzer only, but some tear out occurred. Functionally OK but not ideal, aesthetically undesirable. opportunity to show patching.

Patched smaller holes by melting material on back of tip and smearing after cleaning and sanding to fix tear-out.

Trimmed patch with panzer only to base level. Alternatively, stop just before base and switch to finer cutting and smooth options.

Sanded, filed & scraped to even out and feather weld to blend with base.

View of weld. Not perfect but more than adequate functionally. Can be improved upon with taking more time and stopping use of panzer sooner and using finish tools.

Different lighting shows more positive looking results.

Aggressive structuring with rilling tool blends appearance further. Ready for resanding and rilling for finer structure, clean and wax.

Cleaned w/base cleaner, hot scraped and then waxed w/Race Base, brushed and waxed w/P1 spray, brushed & polished.

Here's a primer from a while back for dealing with core shots.
    Best regards, Terry

    Fix it yourself.
I stop at picture 11. Who cares what the bottom of your skis look like as long as no water is getting into the core? My repairs aren't pretty but they don't come out.

Repair this coreshot myself or take it to the shop?

Sorry to resuscitate an old thread. Kid tore up his skis. I think he landed on a rock. Nothing bent but it’s right next to the edge. Base is warped up a bit and metal edging is exposed.

Got 2 days of skiing left on this trip to JH. I’ve got waxing tools and gflex but no ptex and not sure what the actual fix here is.

    Choices:
He can’t ski them anymore till I get it fixed.
Fuck it, it’ll hold a couple more days till I get home and get it fixed.
Go get some ptex, fill the hole a bit, and hope that holds till I get home and get them fixed.

    Suggestions?

Choices: Get that shit welded @ local shop. Ski
Trim off loose hangers. Ski the fuck out of them. Immediately dry skis and take them inside when you get home/to lodging. Repair @ home.
Ptex repair by dripping will crack and delam. It might not pop out, but at that point it is just going to hold moisture, not prevent intrusion of moisture.

You’re in JH. Plenty of repair shops. Overnight service, no problem.

That needs pro help. If it’s a real ski. If it’s a kid ski, fuck it. They grow so quick.

Core Shot Jr did a nice job there.

X2 on the drip candle and make it the outside edge until you get home and fix it properly.

I’m not hitting Djongo up for anymore favors! Haha. Fucking Covid I can’t even shoot the shit with him at his place while waxing. Sucks.

Thanks for the advice all. Decided to go pro. We found a place that’ll do it today. Took it in for a fix. Dude seemed to know what he’s doing.

Now I just need to make sure he doesn’t snap my skis when he borrows them today. Fucker.

Hellz yeh, and BOTH of you know, he could have dropped them off, I'd have done a drip or just a wax weld for 2 days, then brought them to ya.

Repairs like that are dime a dozen round here. Your boy DOES launch everything in sight though, so there's that.
Watching him ski the other day, the phrase 'squirrel nut zipper' popped into my head.

SFB - come on up, we can keep it safe...Dali and I had a falling out. He was seriously underperforming. Harry gave me the Black sheep glass so there's a new shirriff in town!!
