    Last day
    Inversion continues here in WF
No new, but clear skies up top; high of 32 expected. In the 20s in the shady spots, so thatís where to find the leftover dusty bits.
Sun affected on southern slopes softens after lunch.
Hellroaring Basin is a bit like Heather. Some cool steep bowls and a bunch of tree skiing too with a bit of a luge run at the bottom to get to the lift. And then it takes two lifts to get back to the top (unless you do a forested traverse).
    Fun times had.

In separate news, I was riding the lift yesterday with the boy, and he said he wanted to learn to snowboard. Iíve been half expecting/dreading this day for a while

While I will absolutely support his snow sliding aspirations, I donít have to like it. Heís my best ski buddy. I made sure to point out all the traverses for the rest of the afternoon.

I tell him heís not the best skier on the mountain...yet
(...but the then he does make me chase him & Iím tired AF come 4pm )

Makes me happy that heís come this far with me

I hope you recover quickly...long trips sometimes make you wish you had a vacation afterwards

    My advice:

The traversing bit may be your best talking point to slow roll the transition. Also, the Heather runout to the lift on a snowboard... uggggggh

I saw a splitboarder bootpacking uphill in the backcountry today - they were having problems skinning on an icy skinner and gave up. No problems on skis

Rad skiers get more chicks than rad snowboarders. I have no data to support this, but it sounds about right.

Iím prepared to pour one out for a homie but hope it doesnít happen.

Could be worse - he didn’t say he wanted to telemark

Snowboards seem to be the ticket in deep dense cascade concrete. Question is whether he’s willing to face the learning curve. Even though I hear the difference between a beginner and instructor is three days, he won’t be keeping up with you for a season or two.

Or...you could take up the board as well!

i told mine he could learn to snowboard after he became a good skier. i also told him i am a skier at heart but never got to do it because i have had a bum knee for 30 years (and didn't start until i was 40). he has already heard all the advantages of skiing and doesn't seem to interested in snowboarding at this point.

let him flounder for a few weeks and see how that works out.
in my expert opinion, best bet he has of becoming a *snoborder* is if he gets the eye of a young gal that is a better than mediocre snowboarder.
bring him to BBI, mine still skis fast.

^^^This, particularly the part about girls.
And conversely if you can hook him up with a smart and charming young lady who skis well, his snowboarding days will fall by the wayside.

First race weekend for Ry. Conditions could have been worse. Not going to be a podium thing for us this year, and it's going to take some doing to get him driving the tips, but for his first time, dad was damn proud, and the kid has a damn good time.

Seems like a great time and age for him to try something new and expand his mountain skill set.

Plus maybe it will keep him from becoming an old man skier like the rest of you.

Good point. If he became an old man skier like me, there'd be too much send in the house.
