bibs vs pants for touring

Bless you. I hate suspenders with clips but that's all I could find. I've ordered a couple of pairs.

I've been really happy with these, especially for the price.

back in the day people would wear polartech fleece on the way up & pull the gortex out of the pack for the down which i don't see much any more

Ya. Track pants seem to be the way to go for all weather. Saw it over on Newschoolers. With a pair of adidas and a 30’ bungee the world is yours!!

Big fan on the bibs for touring gang but they have to have lighter fabric for me. Really liked the OR hemispheres bib but they got chewed up and are a bit narrow cut. Just ordered some flyblow Smythe bibs. Hoping they will be a good middle ground with lighter weight fabric with a more "freeride Cut". Anyone have experience with the Smythe bibs? Im 5' 10", 145 and got a medium.

Any experience with the Mammut Haldigrat?

I'm looking for a dedicated touring hardshell pant, and tend to like bibs. I like the idea of a hybrid bib with a softshell bib section, but am a little wary of the zip off bib since that part obviously can't stretch.

(not cheap but I have a coupon I need to use) I have a feeling the ankles wont open enough. i had the Alpine Guide and Mixed Guide pants that I used forever. i don't think they make either anymore but i'm sure you could find them on worn wear or ebay for cheap.
i agree, i don't think the ankles of the simul will do boots. it doesn't look like they are making any multifunctional softshell that will fit boots right now.

Mammut Champ is the best pant that I have ever used for what you describe but they don't make that model anymore. Straight up softshell (Schoeller dryskin), no waterproofing, no insulation, just really good pants. Sans long john bottoms for warm days, with for colder. I'm not sure if they have something similar now. Sizing is a bit weird to dial in sometimes with Mammut pants (or used to be at least) but they make really good stuff.

I think Eddie Bauer has some that are supposed to be decent and you can get super cheap when they do sales.

, i don't think the ankles of the simul will do boots.

I got some Simul pants from 2017 for similar purposes and my main issue was the ankle cuff is pretty small and fits short. I ended up awkwardly shoving the bottom of them into my boots to ski down; unideal with a bottom synch cord. If you're just out for spring, firm snow it could work ok I guess, but they'd be compromised in colder temps or pow. The fabric, cut and design is great otherwise - used them to climb Mt Kenya a few years back!

Arc'teryx warrantied my Stinger Bibs last winter and finally restocked the Sabre LT bibs, as replacement, this fall. So far so good - I like the slightly more athletic cut and bib pocket. Overall a better touring bib for my tastes then the slightly baggy Stingers.

I have used OR Ferrosi pants for some spring ski touring before, just about fit over the cuff of my boots and nice and light, also not expensive.

I've been skiing with these since the season started. They are life-changing. No longer do my pants fall down mid-run when the clips on my suspenders open up. Thank you again.

EB rally nails the bib suspenders by making them velcro adjustable. No buckle to get pressed on by the backpack.
