I was somewhat debating whether I'd back my Backcountrys to go along with the Protests just in case, but then I realized I got the Protests specially for Japan so I might as well use them.
Plus I packed my bag up today and I'm like 8 lbs over already; gotta do enough shuffling as is that another pair of skis seems unreasonable.

Flying to Tokyo from SF on Thursday, we will be in Hokkaido until the 28/29th. Getting either a station wagon or a van, and will be traveling around

    Protests work just fine

They are slightly scary on the ice under the pow, but it’s best to avoid those areas

Did you feel they were overkill? Re-tooling for japan next year. Currently have 189 goats which work in purdy much any condition. Would I be massively missing out if I just brought them?

No, you'll be fine. I skied multiple deep days on Nordica Patrons (113 underfoot) and I never felt like I was missing out. I'm not sure my Protests would have made it that much better.

Get to Kyoto if you can. Way different vibe than Tokyo (and I love Tokyo). Bullet train is cool, too.

Best construction for Praxis protest 4 japan ?

Hah! I’ll check today to see if my bindings will adjust far enough and the next dump we can trade skis.
Edit: nope, 314 is the most I can get out of them.

That’s what you get for not having the Nobelist of boot sizes.
I’ll check. I remember having to mount those not centered in the heel track due to hole conflict. Hoping they are mounted with the track more forward.

For our first two days, the 196 Protests have been serious overkill. Niseko just got out of a warm and dry spell, so we are mostly finding 4-6 inches on a pretty solid crust, there are some deeper spots, as my pic shows.

I did plan on bringing a pair of 193 Blizzard Scouts (108 underfoot), but they got cut at check in due to weight issues (domestic flights on United get 1 bag at 50lbs, and international gets 2 bags at 70lbs, and I booked my Jackson to Denver flight separate from my Denver to Tokyo flight). The past two days I really wished I had the Scouts a few times.

If I was to redo everything and money was no option, I have gotten the 192 Protests last summer instead of 196s for this trip. The 196 Protests are perfect for back home but a tad long here.

I’m 100% fine and having a blast cause when the snow is deep, there isn’t quite anything like Japow, just small thoughts. I’ll do a trip report and gear recap when I get home.

The past two days the Protests were perfect, knee to waste deep pow.

Today, not enough ski? Asahidake got 48 in (or more cause no one measures here) and we were submarining all day. Then again I’m not sure anything would of been big enough

I did a Japan trip on 191 goats almost exclusively. Had 1 day of touring on my Quixote’s.

I was not upset with these tools.

Fkna. So what you’re saying is that I don’t NEED more skis? This is the information I was looking for - my wife thanks you.
