Overrated vacation / gravity-based recreation destinations

    1. Bend, OR. It’s not a bad place by any means—I lived there a decade and have been visiting there regularly (family) for many many years—but the extensive network of mountain biking trails just can’t make up for the lack of vertical. Skiing-wise, Bachelor is low angle cruising, and the BC is pretty limited if you don’t want to mess around with a sled approach.

The dirtjump scene qualifies as mecca-level at least.

Leavenworth, WA - I live here, it sucks.
Maui - overpriced, crowded, Disney type experience almost everywhere.
I 2nd Bend, the mountain biking is boring unless you're a XC nerd.

Alyeska. You can have a blast if you live near there, but you have to fly past a lot of badass skiing to get there from the lower 48.

    Mt. Baker.

Sure they get epic snow, followed immediately by epic rain.

Whistler or anywhere in the coastal NW is questionable as a destination for skiing because it's so crazy variable. If you live in the area and are flexible it's a different story. What I've seen/skied in Alaska kind of gives me the same opinion on that.

I think Moab is super beautiful and I enjoyed riding Whole Enchilada for the experience and scenery, but large portions of that trail are hammered BS compared to what I'm used to.

Exactly. And from mid Jan thru March just about anywhere in the NW is a sure bet there'll be skiing

    Any where in the east.

I disagree about Jackson, great all around region, overpriced but still a great place (hence why it is overpriced.)

I agree it is a constitutional right for Americans to be assholes...its just too bad that so many take the opportunity...

Put me down as X3 on Maui. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a nice place, but not as nice as my inlaws seem to think. Too developed for my taste. MIL spends 2+months of the winter there every year, and invites the family. I accompany my ladies about every 3rd year on their pilgrimage. But then I love our winters, so there is that.

if you want a cheapish untouched island fantasy, Hawaii ain't it. probably hasn't been for 40 years or more. still pretty.

overrated is the mismatch between expectation and reality. a pretty, nice, safe, undeveloped tropical destination doesn't stay that way for long.

When your choices are limited mediocre is as good as it gets. Sucks when you enjoy a once a year trip out west then have to come home to shifty terrain and icey conditions.

that's nice. are you rich, or are you taking advantage of places that will soon go out of business? awesome ski areas with no crowds, now, depend on largess or cluelessness. smug doesn't change that.
