SNOW IN THE PNW 2018-19

Almost nobody there. Great weather. Very variable snow. Pretty much have to walk through dirt and rocks too get to where snow starts.

It was some sloppy patrolling and I overheard, "If people can't obey the signage and we have to put up rope lines we just won't do this again"

Said signage was a collection of perpetually falling-over lollipops and some scribbles on various whiteboards. Place has really gone downhill since the KimmyK days

Arrived to Paradise with a weirdly empty parking lots at 8:00 am. Climbed up to the base of the Anvil, that pointy rock at the upper right above.

I have never seen so few people there. That was nice.

The main Nisqually chute had slid with last weeks snow and was filled with runnels in the funnel and debris chunks in the gut. Oh well.

Snow was really guanchy but we slogged on until calling it at noon/9000.

We need some freeze cycles.

So, still able to ski from the car at WA pass up Spire. Won’t last with overnight temps as high as they’ve been. Prolly the earliest I’ll have stopped skiing there in 25 years.

Finally knocked out the southern route up Baker.

Long slog in from 3600 to almost 4500 for skinnable snow. 45-55 is mostly garbage mildly cupped, sticky and flat. 55-8k is quite good the crevasses are (mostly) open, although there's a few sagging snow bridges on the Mid Easton.

Skied Muir yesterday. The top 2/3rd skied really well. The bottom 1/3rd was interesting and the snow is melting fast. Saw a large serac fall which was exciting.

That's a good summary of what we found on Muir. A brisk wind developed around 11:00'ish and a lenticular formed just a bit earlier. Checked out the Nisqually chute and the upper section slid off the snow from a cold snap 10 or so days ago. Pure clear ice on that part of the slope was a sign to carefully pull back, you do not want to take that fall. Corn was nice high, below maybe 7,500 it started getting a bit stickier but navigable to the parking lot with a couple portages past the dry spots.

Hi PNW thread. Any speculation as to whether Rainier or Baker will be skiable late June through mid-July? "Skiable" meaning okay, not terribly terrible skiing.

The wife and kids are going to be out of town, so I'm contemplating whether I could make a short trip from Tahoe during that time to knock one of the two out. (Maybe permits are hard to come by? They tend to be something I forget to consider.)

Permits are not needed below 10k or so.

I never get above 10k, which is likely your target, so I can't comment on that. It has been unseasonably warm with no refreeze at night and pretty soft snow below 10k.

Inter Glacier will likely still be good for 3500 to 4000 vertical feet below Camp Schurman.

is this white river? did you summit via the emmons? thinking of doing it in 3 weeks. think it'll still be worth it then?

No summit, I just skied from Steamboat Prow.

Continuous snow starts about 200-300 vertical feet below the Glacier Basin Camp. The Inter Fork was still snow covered, but the the snow bridge to access the bottom of the "winter route" has melted out, so most people were taking the summer trail to GBC. It should be possible to hop some rocks and net yourself an extra few hundred vertical feet of turns, but depending on how the flow ramps up with the heat of the day, you may be backtracking to the summer route. No suncups or cracks starting to appear on the Inter Glacier itself.

As for three weeks from now, your crystal ball is as good as mine.
