CAgrown... chains on front wheels & 2WD.

But the trick is to only drive in reverse.

All vehicles, except 4WD and AWD, must put on chains when tire chains are required. However, 4WD and AWD vehicles still need to carry chains in order to proceed across the pass.

I always assumed that carrying chains in a 4wd/awd is just a way of warding off the v00d00-w000w000.

I heard loading up my rocket box with snow for the descents gives better traction on the ups AND downs.

But seriously, why is it such a stupid question to ask? I would assume that putting chains on only your 2wd drive axle and then putting it into AWD/4WD would cause issues with the traction control systems and/or the tranny? I have no intention of ever putting chains on my car as roads close long before i would need chains, but im just curious.

I started a Tire Chain tech talk thread so we won't clog up the stoke thread.

You won't damage you 4runner by putting chains on it in 4x4.

The way it was explained to me, almost 10 years ago by a state patroller on the Mt. Baker Hwy, is that by the time chains are req'd on all vehicles, the road is most likely to close. But you need to carry chains in case you're beyond the closure and need to get out... even though it's unlikely you'd need them.

I have a set of "decoy" chains that live in the truck that I purchase decades ago for some vehicle long forgotten.

Only time I've been forced to do so... was at Hurricane Ridge.

But we skied like 30" of blower so it was ok in the end.

Road closed is just for state liability insurance reasons or that the DOT's drinking hours are starting soon

Was it chains required on all vehicles on the Mt Baker hwy? That is interesting. I know it is a long and treacherous drive out there but typically everyone is a skier so they drive in a similar fashion. I90 and to a lesser extent US2 have a high number of non-skier drivers compared to skier drivers. That is the problem. Also the typical snowfall for those latter two areas is followed by warming which slickens the roads and destroys the in area snow.

I was wondering the same thing. It's over at the base of 6, so no lifty to sweep it yet?

Today Green Valley skied pretty well, probably 6" new, this next storm should get things rolling

So, if you drive a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, beware. There are situations where you will be required to chain up even with traction tires and 4wd, when 2wd cars won't. Even if you're unloaded.

Guessing it's due to the mass amount of people who can't think for themselves and just assume they're good in a truck with shitty tires just cause it's 4x4.

Common sense. So rare today in America it's almost like having a superpower.
