SNOW IN THE PNW 2018-19

So where did you get current satellite pics. My quick googling only had historical.

Keep an eye out for string of early summer high temp days in Seattle.

You want clear still nights and rapid warming during the day to get good conditions. It can be down right miserable without the right combo.

I've read the access to Cannon has become an ordeal, not like early 1980's when I drove my Opel Rallye over a snow pile and gate at mountaineer t.h. to the end of the (now impassible) spur where we camped. You could ski to within 100 ft. of the car. On one occasion my buddy tossed a seal bomb used by fishermen in Alaska to ward seals away from nets into the cirque. We waited for maybe 8 seconds and then a freight train of snow poured off the cliff. Wouldn't do that again but we could see the above terrain, only climbers there, and were nowhere near the runout zone so done as responsibly as you could. Sad it's now such a tough go, it was one of the "must-do's" that had reasonable access.

The Cannon Couloir is a siren, calling to you from the bridge at the campground to your doom (or, at least to a real bad day of schwacking). What's left of the spur road is terrible. But so are the low elevation approach slopes directly above it. From the road, you'll be making a rising traversing (most likely on foot not skis) a couple thousand feet on thin snow over burned down snags, and it will probably really suck (especially in a low snow year, like this one). The ski run is pretty damn short too. The math simply doesn't add up. If it did, the locals would be lapping it all the time, but they don't.

Planet (formerly Planet Labs) has an Earth-observing CubeSat network. You really should check out their main site here: https://www.planet.com/

I have a research account with Planet so I can download some limited area of daily imagery with Planet Explorer:

I'm not sure what you get without an account. I think Planet provides free hi-res access to all of California, or at least they used to. Might be nice for the Sierra crowd.

The other option is NASA Worldview:
https://worldview.earthdata.nasa.gov/

Worldview is a bit easier to use but has worse resolution and it's a bit harder to filter cloudy days. It does have many more data sources, though, so if you want to look at precipitation of something it might be better.

I thought the California thing was a post fire offer. Just like they did for some of the big storms in the East coast last year

I'm thinking of skiing Baker in late June. Does it look like the snow will still last?

Mount Baker is glaciated, so there is always snow if one goes high enough.
Mt. Baker Ski Area will likely be patchy to bare by late June.

Right now, the PNW corn factory is firing with freezing nights above 3500 and melty days. Nice to get instead of the usual drizzlefog.

June is perfect for all the volcanoes. Weather is usually the only problem. June isn't always sunny

Agree. It seems last season we had more snow, but it always seemed to only get down to 33* overnight. This year has been cold, and we even got a nice 1" of new to cover the darkness and reflect heat. (I am a bit addicted to the telemetries.) Keep it coming.

Nwf of cannon might have a crux at the bottom of the face. Kinda there in the winter. Not sure about spring.

I'd probably head back to check out argonaut or sherpa north gulleys, or sherpa glacier on stuart.

There will absolutely be snow at Baker in June. Table chutes will probably still go and there is generally reliable snow out Ptarmigan Ridge towards Coleman Pinnacle well into the summer. Pic from July 24, 2012.

Yesterdays corn harvest was abundant, the freezing/thaw cycle set up some quality snow around Crustal with overnight temperatures in the 20s.

Coverage up there is fantastic, it's a crime Alterra doesn't have it open.

Today there's an inversion, so it's going to be sloppy.

Haha I was talking to a guy in hood river about that. Turns out Walter, the guy who posted the video, is a 60+ year old dude who loves slogs and pain fests. He’s the Nordic skiing coach for the high school here in town, and he recruits all of his former Nordic team members/students as partners for these ridiculous adventures after they graduate. That kid in the video - it was one of his first times on AT gear (maybe it was the first, but I don’t want to make the story that much more hilarious if I’m not certain about it)! Haha!
