FWIW, I wrote this "Top 25 Soundtracks" article back in the day:

    https://www.ign.com/articles/2007/08...25-soundtracks

Long "Honorable Mentions" list at the end of the article, too.

I pretty much had most of the ones that have been tossed out on this thread, plus quite a few that as of yet have not been mentioned.

Lawrence of Arabia. I guess that's technically a score rather than a soundtrack. Can I choose The Decline of Western Civilization or are documentaries out of the running? Used to listen to that soundtrack all the time.

3 very cool jazz movie scores:
-- Alfie (Sonny Rollins, orchestra directed by Oliver Nelson)
-- Anatomy of a Murder (Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn)
-- Man with the Golden Arm (Elmer Bernstein)

I think that could qualify as thread unto itself. A lot of really good stuff out there that was created for motion pictures.

I have a hard time getting fired up about movie soundtracks that are just a compilation of good songs that fit the movie theme. An example: Forrest Gump had a great and perfectly fitting soundtrack, but it also sounds just like my local classic rock station on any given Saturday afternoon. Meh. My bias put aside, here's a few:

The Endless Summer (and the sequel)
Star Wars: A New Hope and Empire
The Lord of the Rings (all 3 together)
    Braveheart
    Tron Legacy
    Mad Max: Fury Road
    Slumdog Millionaire

    Kill Bill vol. 1
    Pulp Fiction
Fat fuck bubbas are not erosion.
