Patagonia R4 coat--What compares?
I've had 2 Patagucci R4 s over the past 16 years and loved their function. Unfortunately, the windproofing went in the first one after 7 years and my 9 year old one is losing the windproofing also. Patagonia won't repair the windproofing.
It's like a heavy fleece made with Polartech. Windproof and just very warm- almost too hot on days it's above freezing. I loved the maneuverability of it. It was like a sweatshirt or something. It fit nicely and maneuvered with you. It was quiet too.
-Warm on the coldest days (-20f) without heavy layers underneath.
-Moves freely.
-Quiet.
It wasn't a shell per-se.
What compares? Let me know. ThanksTake a sniff. Pull it out... The taste is gunna move ya when ya pop it in your mouth!

My wife has loved her R4 for 10+ years. Seems like a lot of brands have moved to wool/fleece blends to fulfill this type of product.
Closest I could find - https://www.backcountry.com/norrona-...e-jacket-mens?
Maybe somewhere between the R4 and Retro-X - https://www.backcountry.com/rab-orig...le-jacket-mens

Recently replaced my wife's well loved R4 (she lost it. Still have mine and its going strong!)
I was disappointed to learn Patagonia had dropped them from the lineup and tried to research an appropriate replacement.
I ended up buying a NOS R4 from eBay.
It's a hell of a coat. If you love it, just get another. They're out there...

I wore an R4 for many years until it really just didn't work anymore.
I replaced it with this, and it is better in every way. It's lighter, warmer, more compressible, etc.:
