I came across an interesting article with videos about a stray dog who got adopted by a coyote pack. Not all that common but it does happen.. Coydogs are a thing too. Got a friend who has a dog/wolf mix. Killer looking white wolf named "Ghost" of course. That thing is a handful he says..

Talking about this. Like I said, not common but can and does occasionally happen.
Coydog
A coydog is a canid hybrid resulting from a mating between a coyote and a dog. The term is sometimes mistakenly used for coywolves, which are common in northeast North America, whereas true coydogs are only occasionally found in the wild.Go that way really REALLY fast. Around these parts coyotes are considered a pest species and you welcome to shoot them anytime you please with your preferred method.

Around here the farmers shoot 'em and hang them on the barbed wire fences. What's up with that? Do they think the other 'yotes are going to see their dead friends and high tail it outta there?

Well yeah for some farmers. I'm not one to shoot anything. I will tell you they don't shut up about it - usually post picks on local social media pages.
That is the thought process.

Acme coyote hunting
The dead coyote fence thing was brought up in another thread about coyotes. It has no effect on coyote behavior. People like to get all anthropomorphic, and yet if a cemetery was near your job, (which it kind of is, if you drive somewhere), does it stop you from going to work?
People kill coyotes because they can, and they like to kill shit, it’s as simple as that.Well maybe I'm the faggot America

Yep. Like I noted last week, people systematically tried to exterminate coyotes for 50+ years and failed. Studies have shown that they can withstand as much as a 70 percent yearly kill rate without suffering any decline in their total population. Shoot as many as you want, but they're going nowhere. Might as well try to exterminate invasive carp through fly fishing while you're at it.

Yup. These catfish heads will also stop catfish getting to your field, (as well as dead coyotes will stop coyotes):

Love the analogy to carp extermination
Yup, Coyotes are survivors. We have a bunch of 'em here, mostly because we are overrun by deer and are about 15 miles from an elk calving ground. Not to mention a plethora of ground squirrels, cats and yapper dogs. Only competition is two families of mountain cats. Plenty for all.
They put on one hell of a sing on clear nights. Really cool IMO
You guys bitching about 'em raiding henhouses, look at it from their perspective. They're thinking "Dude, thanks for locking them up so they can't escape! So much easier to catch. Yo da Mang! I'll be back!"
And don't be bitching about losing a couple of sheep or goats. Look at it as coyote property tax since they were here first. It's not like they're wipe out an entire herd. Get a donkey for protection
Now raccoons - fuck em. Nuke from space, behead remains if any

‘Yotes were here long before Anglos brought domesticated ungulates and fowl with them. So I don’t see why livestock owners get to make up new rules about what gets to eat what
Regardless, you won’t eradicate them. When the world ends, the last survivors will be coyotes, cockroaches, Norway rats, and Cher.

Gotta say, I like the way you and Plugboots think on this topic. I would like to live in a more rural setting at some point, but listening to the conversation and not wanting to kill any animals, I am uncertain I could fence the critters out well enough to not end up getting pissed off.
I mean are we talking a fully enclosed dog run, off the house, so the cat and dogs could go outside unattended and not have to deal with danger and no fucking raccoons coming in the doggy door looking for dog food?

Yes. Or you can just take your chances. If mother nature has a lot of other things for them to eat then they probably won't bother your animals. If your dog is big enough that will deter them too. I have seen them in my horse pastures in the middle of the day and they will follow me when I'm mowing with the tractor to grab any ground nesting animal I might run over <shudder>
Remember they are omnivores so if you have fruit trees near your house you will need to pick up fallen fruit or it will draw them in for a snack.“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something." Rep. John Lewis
