    2018/2019 Midwest Stoke

Tyrol was open today! We were driving by and stopped in. Such a pretty little valley not far from Madison. Lots of PBR's flowing and tons of kids getting after it. The spirit of skiing is alive and well in the midwest!

Fresh to the Midwest from the PNW, Portland specifically. Now reside in the flatness of the Twin Cities. Just bought my first paid of park skis at age 45 - should be painful. Still have my volcano climbing set ups if anyone fancies fast change over laps on a random slope this winter.

I miss Tyrols early and late season sessions hiking a fun park setup. I remember back are 2000 I got to ski on my bday in June out there.

And apparently a new young owner. From the article Tyrol was closed from 86-89 which was when I was in high school exploring every ski area within a days drive with my 86 Ford Escort. I never skied it till last year when my daughter had a race there. Cool little place. Deep valley, faces north, fun little shots. Vertical is really short but just enough I guess.

Nice to see some new blood taking over the midwest resorts. Whitecap Mountain near the UP has new ownership too, and they are overhauling the mountains amenities and cutting new trails for some tree skiing.

Thinking about heading to Tyrol with the family after Thanksgiving.
Hoping it will be open by that weekend. Dont need much as it will be centered around getting the 3 year old time on skis.

Also, Mount Horeb looks like a great spot for a weekend get away. Cave of the Mounds, Blue Mound State Park single track, hiking.

I'm in NE Illinois. Is that close enough? Have a pass at Wilmot if you want to hook up.

Bit the bullet and made the RV plunge... We will be calling this home for the weekends during the winter... It is about as close to ski in - ski out as you can get at our little dive ski area... You can see the lifts in the background... Actually pretty excited and met up with a lot of our ski crew who were also getting their campsites ready for winter...

Bring on the season...Click image for larger version.

Well, it's been cold and snowy in Marquette. Our ski hill isn't making snow yet, or packing down the natural snow that we're getting. They ringed the entire ski area access with prison fence for the whole summer and are leaving it up, so we can't hike the hill. We also can't get to the lifts except by walking all the way across the muddy parking lot and through their shitty building, which all fits together with their other surprise awful plan of having season passholders stand in line for day tickets, and eliminating about half of the space they used to have for putting boots on. The old space was often too small, now we have half.
When I went to go get my pass, for the third time, I asked if they've been maintaining the tree skiing this summer (because they fenced us all out), and the woman there said "what do you mean by tree skiing" ....yes, we've heard of skiing, but what is this tree skiing? She actually used the exact phrase "but what is this tree skiing"

So if there are cool ski area owners buying midwest ski areas, tell them to come buy this one, and fast. The people owning and running this mess have zero, zeeee rrrohhhhhh clue what they're doing.

We will be skiing on Friday. Probably won't need the BGs!

I live in WY but have an office in Mke. Get there a handful of times a year. Haven’t skied the Midwest in 25-30 years and don’t keep any gear there. But, if you’re in Mke, I’d be happy to have a cold beer sometime.

7 Oaks in Boone, Iowa just announced they are opening this weekend. Been making snow since the temps dropped earlier this week.

Looks like tons of places are open this weekend. Chestnut still saying next Friday though arrrggh. Probably try to get up to Sundown tomorrow afternoon since they will be open and my 8 year old is begging us to go somewhere, anywhere. Tyrol has a bunch of stuff open. Look like up in the cities there is choices. We will be up at Trollhaugen next weekend for a race camp skiing Saturday and Sunday. https://trollhaugen.com/thanksgiving-race-camp

Had a great time in Canyonlands earlier this week escaping the greybird midwest for a few days with the wife. It is amazing how with highs in the 40's and lows in the lower 20's everything feels warmer in the high desert. Super fun trip. Hung out under the Brooks Range tarp in the evenings for warm dinner and drinks.

Also people can say whatever they want about American Airlines but they are 1000% better than Frontier for getting to fun zones out west. CID-Dallas-Grand Junction easy peasy.

    uglym- cool photos

Tyrol is currently looking a little soggy, but the live webcam shows a groomer pushing around the snow they made earlier this week. Forecast calls for 1"-2" of snow tonight and colder temps for the next few days, so..... looks like good snowmaking weather.

They all have the machines cranked tonight with middle teens predicted. Chestnut going great guns on the webcams. They might be able to open 100% next Friday. We went to Sundown tonight and it was worth it. Good snow and not too many people and I guess I don't mind paying $20 for lift tickets when a place throws down and opens up before Chestnut. Felt great to make some turns!

My eight year old grooving down 'Rundown' as we lovingly call it tonight.

    ^^^ Little ripper! ^^^

That looked like a cool run for a small ski area, and I liked hearing the scratchy, icy sounds of midwest skiing.

Thanks Skuff! We skiing this year?

475 vert and pretty flat in the middle so the runs are long. My biggest beef is the Dubuque county dropoff culture. Kids on the hill and parents in the lodge wtf? F bombs dropping every few seconds in the lift line and on the lift through the pines... lol some things never change and kids will be kids. Lucky they have an urban ski area to enjoy. All that said good terrain open and recent investments in quiet energy efficient snow blowers paying dividends. #driftless

    This thread is awesome.

I no longer remember how absolutely jacked I used to get for ski season when I lived in Indiana. Starting in September it was all I and a couple of other friends could talk about.

We all managed to move west and ski a lot and while I am still ready to ski on Thursday, the urge is nowhere near what it was when Nashville Alps was rockin.

I was at IU in 76-77, we had a ton of snow and my brother lived in Brown County. We hiked some hills in the park.

Never got to ski the Alps, it opened the next year, but I had already transferred to CSU.

Now Brown County’s the MTB Mecca of the Midwest.

Never thought I'd see Bullet stoke on TGR! I think my Dad was skiing with the guy in the red coat (Chris maybe) at the very beginning of the video. No Headwall yet? Your little girl rips, good looking turns, feeling the edges!

My parents still live in Barrington Lakes, about 10 minutes away. My Uncle's taught lessons at Sundown for 40 years. I grew up dropping F bombs in the woods and prank calling the lodge, asking if they'd get on the loud speakers and announce that Pamela Anderson's parents were here to pick her up.

I'm driving home from CO tomorrow. Bringing my boots, hoping to borrow Dad or bro's old skis and hit Sundown on Friday. Vail and Beaver Creek both had early openings with banner early season conditions, and they're a much shorter commute, but something kind of fun having my first day of the season at Sundown.

Speaking of #driftless, my friend Lily is a rocking banjo player in the Driftless Sisters. They're pretty good, catch em live if you can.

More stuff opening all the time, they had what they now call 'headwall' open but it was scraped and icy. I will never forgive them for grading and flattening the Headwall. Best top to bottom run was always gunbarrel, gs turns through the trees and then perfecting a bump line on Headwall and squirting out without running into anybody.

Chestnut opening Friday and I am going way up north to Trollhaugen this weekend for a race camp with the daughter. If that wasn't happening I would find a way to make some turns with you.

Funny one of the guys who travels with us out west on our pilgrimages was an instructor at the Downs for years and years also. Like a lot of us old guys he has migrated over to the Nut and he won't even bother with skiing Rundown but I love going on occasion...especially with the girl.

Was your dad skiing with two SMRaceT kids? There was only a handful of people older than 17 on the entire hill.

Appreciate the kind words on my girls skiing and thanks for the tip on the band. Love me some Banjos. Stringdusters coming here soon and saw Jeff Austin Friday in IC.

Live from Trollhaugen...all 280 vertical feet. Plenty open. Kinda warm but snow holding up and no ice. Cold moving in.

Local beer imported from Cedar Rapids, IA. My understanding is that ski beers are controversial in some regions of the US but I am in Wisconsin so no pocket beer police to worry about.

There should be a TGR Wisconsin/Midwest ski meetup in Milwaukee - I have a pass at sunburst - would anyone be interested in having one there? Maybe there can be a group lift ticket discount?
