This was part of an avy 1 course so we started after lunch. that was saturday and it was crazy windy and cold so our group did not go past Hojo. the other group went partway up hillmans to learn to dig a test pit but it was so windy we dug our pit by the 'winter toilets'. sherb skied great! today, on the other hand was just beautiful in tux.

It looked better than it skied. But there were lots of twigs.

Still, my new AT gear enjoyed its maiden BC voyage.

looks awesome. what AT gear you in?

It was better than groomers, that's for sure. But the ~10" powder was very light, and the tails of my skis were scraping the ice crust below it. Another few inches (preferably slightly denser) should make it perfect, though.

    The setup:

Skis: Atomic Backland FR 102 - a little lighter than you're usual in-bounds ski, but heavier than most BC skis of similar dimensions. Funky sidecut and mount point, but I like them.
    Bindings: Marker Kingpin
Boots: Dynafit Radical Boot - Cheap, and heavy (for an AT boot). But they fit the budget, and hey - they work. I probably need to get a little fitting work done.
    Skins: G3 Alpinist. No complaints

Fail! Solid bright Red or Blue with Pink Polka Dots ONLY!

    In other news...
It has been cold but damn beautiful out there. Great to see all of the stoke and pretty photos. I finally got out for some turns Saturday. Coaching my sons hockey team has been taking up a lot of my time.

Snow throughout the previous week had set up nicely at Burke. Even though the morning was cold, there was no wind so it was actually quite pleasant and the deep blue clear sky was a great contrast to the frozen mountain. After noon the main groomers were getting pretty scrapped off but the woods were holding up pretty well. Things should be great this weekend if the forecast holds.

    Interesting Afternoon Light in Throbulator:

    Last Run:

Crazy inversion yesterday morning. -18 in town, +18 on the Mt Washington.
Aim for the chopping block. If you aim for the wood, you will have nothing. Aim past the wood, aim through the wood.

Darn. I'll have my mom pick me up a pair. Thanks for the education.

Can't see your pic, FWIW. Might be my vpn, though...

Yes. It was perfectly clear and calm which is the perfect conditions for cold air to pool in the valleys. It was actually an even colder -20 in Berlin, NH yesterday morning. So in the 15 miles and a ~5200' of elevation gain, the temp went up 38 degrees.

You can actually see some of the distortion caused by the inversion boundary if you looked close.

I've seen that distortion before looking east towards the Whites from the Long Trail. The White Mountains looked like huge flat topped mesas. Very weird.
