Otto not scheduled for guided tours until 5/25, drive yourself TBD. This does not bode well for Slackfest this year.

My bunk is already reserved. Backup plan is hoofing it to Hermit Lake and seeing what catches my interest.....not much Slacking in that....c'est la vie.

Anyone know why they don't use a giant snowblower/rotary plow setup in the clearing process? Those seem to be working pretty well as part of the process on a lot of western roads (particularly Beartooth Pass and Yellowstone roads, but I'm pretty sure those aren't the only crews using them).

It’s a private road so they choose how/when they want it open.

    Entirely true.

It just seems, based mostly on the videos of the rotary plows powering through large drifts, that having one would allow them to move snow more efficiently and get the road open quicker (and with fewer man- and equipment-hours invested). I'm curious if the local snowpack is less amenable to such devices or if it just doesn't make sense to own one to use it three weeks a year.

I'm guessing your last sentence is why...the not making sense part. Big issues are thawing the drainage and road repairs to get it up and going. It's a money maker, so they definitely try to get it open asap.

I am calling Lincoln last to open, 108 is more important for commuter carbon footprint reduction

My take is they are firm on the 25th opening for advanced bookings and the self drive will be open before that date.

    Got 1 kicking around.

Sunday proved to be less inspiring than Saturday. Steady 42` and windy with no sol to warm us. Carved the sheet of the headwall until it bumped, grilled some cheese, meats and not meats [surprisingly good taste, poor texture] and drank some beers.

    Slim turnout on the beach.

Edit - A bud from down in the valley sent this pic. Pretty bright line distinction about where the snow level was.
