You'll want Dr. Thomas Higgins or Dr. David Rothberg at the University of Utah Orthopedic Center. Both very excellent trauma surgeons. Call 801-587-7109 to schedule an appointment.

It's certainly a shit show out there, again.
I'm not a hand specialist, but I'd guess no surgery. Do you have the other XR views? The lateral views (where you had to make an "OK" sign) show angulation better. If I remember correctly metacarpals will heal well with up to 20(?) degrees of angulation. The other big question is the amount of rotation if any. If no rotation and no angulation (i.e. your fingers make a fist and all line up right), you should be good to go in 6-8 weeks.

Funny, I was in there on the 27th chatting with an old nurse friend in the clinic and Dr. Ken came out to chat. I did nearly the exact same thing (3rd and 4th metacarpals though) last year on December 24th.

I'd recommend Dr. Andy Tyser or Dr. Angela Wang at the University of Utah Orthopedic Center. Both are excellent hand surgeons. Tyser is the guy I saw, my XR looked very similar, I healed up just fine non op.

    Call 801-587-7109 for an appointment.

Thanks! The doctor at the Alta clinic also recommended both of these orthopedists and said he put in a call already.

Hey all, I'm in Utah this month and I'm looking for touring partners. I have been backcountry skiing since 2010 and have done some avy courses. I am available Thursday to Monday of this week and the 21st until the 27th. Down for any type of skiing as long as the conditions allow.

Good deal. Dr. Libre is really good with setting up referrals.

Dr. Higgins is the most senior trauma surgeon there, very good physician, very good dude, I've always liked working with him.

Best of luck, we'll see ya next year.

    Hey Peep!
I got this in my email from one of the canyon officers regarding the rescue on short swing yesterday:

"As a side note; The reporting party did not call 911. They actually called Alta Central requesting WBR assistance. Alta Central then called UPD. Because of this, Canyon Patrol thought the injured party was in Little Cottonwood Cyn. It was not until we actually talked to the reporting party on the phone realizing they were in BCC. A lot of time waisted calling Alta Central instead of calling 911."

If this had been a time critical emergency this would have been bad! Call 911 first (then Alta Central if you want.... )

Actually calling Alta central is the way to go. They actually know the terrain and have maps. The mistake was made when Alta central relayed to upd. Upd dispatchers and most of the canyon patrol cops are totally clueless as to their whereabouts in either canyon. Don’t believe me, call upd dispatch sometime. Most of them have never even been in either canyon. Surprised Alta central didn’t contact WBR as well as Upd. Alta central-WBR talking to each other is your best bet for a timely rescue. Eliminates the Jerry’s from messing it up.

As a canyon employee our training includes calling Alta central. They know the backcountry names and can route the appropriate personal quickly.

Maybe in the past, but 911 dispatch has updated training to handle avalanches. They are going to try to get a GPS ping off your phone, (Alta central can't do this), dispatch medical resources (Unified Fire) , and transfer the call off to the UPD officer in charge. This will get WBR, SAR, etc. rolling. WBR is under the Sheriff's department like SAR, and they cannot self dispatch with out the ok from a UPD officer. If you want to call Alta central after 911, go for it. Calling Alta central yesterday delayed things, it's a fact. Do what you want with this info. PM me if you need more clarification.

Since you work for SAR I think I'll pay attention to your thoughts. It's a bit confusing there are opinions on this though, as for me I have no real world experience with this in either canyons and don't know shit.

yeah I'll listen to sfotex. also everything I've heard from the UAC/etc the past few seasons has been "call 911, they will connect you with someone who has the wbskiing map with all the run names on it"

happily haven't had to do it yet...

Just got an update and calling 911 is important for the GPS ping. If you have a group of 3. Call both. Sounds like their phone died yesterday. Officer on duty was green from what I hear.

We're super lucky around here to have WBR and good cell reception. Certainly another safety tool. But knowing exactly where your are and having a full battery are also key. Personally. I keep phone in a warm place away from becon. Always carry an extra puffy and emergency blanket even for short tours. Also carry some painkillers. They can really help make moving an injured person easier. Self extraction is easily the most over looked safety precaution.

I forget who here posted about it who I stole this idea from, maybe XXXer, but sticking a toe warmer on the back of your phone on days like today when it's brutally cold does wonders for stopping the battery dying (especially if you have to take it out of your pocket and use it). Toe warmers are cheap, I just leave a bunch in the car and if it's cold at the TH, I slap one on.

Airplane mode + toe warmer and my phone is usually good all day. And that WBSkiing app will overlay your GPS position on the map in airplane mode too, another perk of living by the central Wasatch.

Thanks for the clarification that 911 is now preferred. I had heard in the past alta central was primary contact as well. As noted above, always carry a warm puffy even if you never wear it. Things can get ugly quick laying in the snow in temps like yesterday's.

Knowing how to get a GPS location off your cell phone and hand it off can shave a shit ton of time off a rescue. Run names are great and all, but short swing, gobblers, etc. doesn't exactly pin point your location. A GPS location can be handed off to Life flight, etc. and if the cards line up you can have a flight nurse dangling on a hook to you in 45 mins or so. Self rescue is the best option, but consider what is going to happen if you make it half way out and things go down hill. Night fall, loss of cell phone reception, weather, location of an lz, etc. can considerably delay things. Nothing wrong with getting help moving your way while you start to move out.

For the whole range, whole state for that matter, not just the LCC.

Just curious, why call Alta dispatch if I’m outside the tri canyons?
