WASATCH STOKE, CONDITIONS, OBSERVATIONS, AND ASSORTED DRIVAL 18-19

The Bird skied pretty well for May this morning. Be mindful of where the buried wet slide debris lies and soft turns were plentiful!

On the first tram a guy told us that the reason the cirque traverse has been closed was that there wasn't enough snow on the traverse. Yeah I don't think so bud...

Skied from timp's summit this past saturday and the Battle Creek drainage off its west face is still serving over 5000 foot descents. As we sat on the top of the peak in hopes that the top would corn up, it dawned on me that this was my 10th descent on timpanogos and the first time I've skied off its true summit. After waiting for about an hour, we gave up and dropped in. The top 700 feet or so was scratchy but then it turned to corn for the majority of the descent.

avy destruction. we called this the convenience avalanche as it was really convenient to be able to ski all the way down to the hiking trail coming up battle creek.

Nothing beats hiking down a trail in the spring with skis on your back. "is there snow up there?" I turn around and look at the massive mountain behind me that dominates the provo skyline, turn back, "looks like it to me"

thought the NW would be good but it was pretty crusted, so we skied the NE face (??), which goes beautifully with a nice little mini spine feature down into a chute

when we were down below Boissal saw us from the skinner on the ridge and, with respect to the crust, shouted "I should have stayed in bed" lol, hope you found something soft too man!

the snow on the bridge at the trailhead is developing into the crux of the whole affair...

Face shots?? FAKE NEWS!!! That picture was obviously edited...

But seriously, WTF happened up there? I didn't expect the W aspect to have taken that much of a beating and grown such a stout crust... It barely saw any sun and the winds were very calm. And it didn't exactly get warm, in fact it was in my top 5 coldest days of the year!

My better-half skied Little Chute yesterday at 2PM and said it was all times with no bottom feeding to report. That convinced me to take the big sticks out to shred May pow but even on the due N aspect I felt like I was riding a very wild bronco, every third turn the boot-deep pow would disappear with no visual clue and be replaced with the weirdest of glazes. It made for a pretty tense descent of the rock-lined chute I spotted earlier this year. I vastly underestimated the angle, hucked the entrance cornice into what looked like pow but turned out to be ice (great), almost cartwheeled over the cliff bands below (even better), then had to escape an angry sluff while negotiating variable nonsense (I get it Red Baldy, you're not happy with me this season).

Apparently the BDays were also full of chunder so I decided to save myself the trouble and focus on the bridge which, as MW pointed out, is quite the ordeal right now... There's a narrow spot in the middle where you can barely fit 1 ski. I went for it, my crotch is still unimpressed.

Sweet action man!! That W face is so appealing...
It always amazes me that people are so surprised to see skiers coming off huge snowy peak on hiking trails. Do you not see the white stuff up there??? When I was in NV one lady refused to believe I had been skiing even though she was in the middle of postholing down a shady section and had just be turned around by consistent snow. Really, you think there's no skiing up there and I just took my skis for a walk?

We found Gepeto's white helmet after he dropped it off the lift at BBIUT. here's to hoping it turns up soon! I'm sure I'll be up in those parts at some point, I'll keep an eye out for ya.

Post to the Utah backcountry fb page as well. Those kooks only ski Alta once they turn off the lifts

I hope you find it, but you'll likely need a new helmet anyways. I've put dents in my Vapor dropping it in the snow, no way that helmet survives a 700 foot fall sorry to say

Found a pair of green pit vipers towards the top of main chute today but no helmet, sorry.

Hopped over to the backside afterwards and found some great supportable but soft snow when I dropped in at noon (as long as you dodged the avy chunks).

The best Alta, is a closed Alta. Especially when you have a bird pass and mineral/Cham chutes are open.

^ good luck man. did look, no dice and told the people i saw that if they found anything, to leave it at the bottom of wildcat. saw you looking for it on under the shoulder. went for east baldy first, then living the dream into mineral, another east baldy and out main. spring skiing is fun shit.

Nothing beats the smooth corn on backside at about 930am. in may after it's sat untouched for 2 weeks. Next best thing to waist deep pow if you ask me. 1.5"-2" deep, smooth, and peeling off like warm butter. So good.

Missing it just talking about it. When baldy and mineral are both open basically the entirety of Alta is available to you.
