That would be rad! I'm kinda thinking like, it would be great to take a vacation to Salt Lake, catch up with some friends, be a tourist, hit up Jarred's bar, do some skiing...maybe some paragliding. You'd be top of the list. Who else skis Snowbird that I know, Jed, Kristen, Fred?

Ned and Kristen are taking off on a two week road trip through old haunts (SW CO, Taos??). Let me know if you decide to ski bc.

A few impressions from a Seattle skier who has never skied Utah down here with his son for the week.

Alta day 1: prez day. Skied Catherine’s, devil’s castle, high traverse. Holy shit, I thought I skied blower pow before, but there is no moisture content at all in the snow here. Truly blown away by how light the snow is. Lift op said busiest day he’s seen, but not at all bad from what I’m used to when ski school is in session and holiday weekends. I can only imagine a foot or two of that dry powder, which we only missed by a couple of days. Felt like coming home to the mother land.

Snowbird day 2: 5 inches new and local gave us 3 hour introductory tour. Awesome day, did I mention how light the snow is?

Solitude day 3: Biggest surprise of the trip so far. “Small mountain, big terrain” is how the patroller on the lift described it and I wholeheartedly agree. This place rocks. Days after the storm and a short traverse:

Deer Valley day 4: Needed to meet a buddy in park city so stopped at dv. $170 day tickets and $1,000 fart bags, do I need to say more:

After a few warm up runs swiveling our hips in tribute to Stein, found a few decent turns off the chutes at top:

But for the ikon would not have gone, and most likely will not return but could see it being fun on a powder day.

Going to spend the next three days at snowbird, which was my favorite mountain and also my son’s. G-love and the special scauce on the plaza at 3 on Saturday should have all the bros out for cold beverages.

    Special place. Count your blessings.

Yes indeed, Add to that list that everything is 30 minutes from the airport and so many affordable digs to lay your head after going hard all day. Probably good that there is no legal weed or the place would be overrun,

Incoming for the weekend. Anyone with a hankering to head north for 2 days?

Gonna be touring with a buddy on Sat/Sun, but then thinking of heading to Jackson for Monday and Tuesday. Should be in Park City for dinner on Tuesday. Likely renting a car for this mini road trip. Looks like the flow is gonna go north and I have a hankering to get back to the Village and ski some long runs!

    PM if interested

Went for a post-work tour yesterday, that SE wind is a bit hard to figure out after 3 month of non-stop blowing from the W...
We found some seriously alpine conditions on the up with frozen noses and fingers. Weird spotty wind crusts noted even on the sheltered low elevation exit. Kicked off a 6" wind slab in a surprisingly protected area, it didn't go far but was stiffer and more powerful than its size suggested.
Still some spectacular skiing to be had but I actually had to put a minimum amount of effort into it, something that hasn't happened since Xmas.

Driving down at 5PM there we people heading up Little Pine, Coalpit #4 (party of 6!!), and what I think is the Goat Gully. Also spotted people coming out of White Pearl. If that's the deal on a weekday an hour before sunset the upcoming bluebird weekend promises to be a zoo of epic proportions. I plan on being part of the problem regardless!

The clouds today were a trip. Partially sunny --> Bluebird -- > completely calm whiteout on the needle/coalpit. Couldn't see anything, zero differentiation between the snow surface and the horizon.

Been too busy with work and school and skiing tons of pow inbounds to do much backcountry skiing this year. Almost glad. It's been as complete shit show out there. No etiquette or common sense what so ever. The skin track right across Flagstaff bowl today was absurd. Regardless of low Avy danger there today. Leave that line for someone to ski. I've seen multiple groups in the Y, maybird, white pine chutes at the same time this year. If there's a party going up a couloir ahead of you common etiquette and sense of self preservation is go somewhere else. Skiing up the apron of superior on a powder day to ski suicide is very poor form. The skin tracks on the Emma's are just stupid. Use the Flagstaff or Davenport hill skin tracks and traverse the ridge. Rant over.

^ I will just say, as a guy whose been only in the bc all year, I haven’t had a bad encounter or conversation with another party. I do my best to avoid the crowds, but nobody’s cut something over me, 3/4 snaked my line, given me a dirty look or been rude. Just smiles and good vibes, and largely safe and in-good-etiquette skiing.

I do wish motherfuckers would stop rounding out the kickturns but I mean, everyone starts somewhere. For the crowds, it’s remarkably not so bad. Bearing in mind I rarely ski upper LCC.

I was thinking about poking around Mary Ellen Gulch via the bottom of Mineral Basin. I know Snowbird is working towards adding a lift over there, but anybody know if I will run into issues trying to do a little skinning over there?

^^^ unwritten rule has always been too not return into mineral via Sunday saddle. While exiting just be quick about it. Pretty sure plans for the lift are off the table as of right now

I'm guessing cloudy but with soft chalky snow? Sounds perfect for Snowbird.
