When you pull into the trailhead and see this on May 24th, it's going to be a good morning.
Bonafide winter snow above 9500' today, with the accompanying instabilities. Sensitive (but small) new cornices, small wind slabs, storm slabs in the new stuff, all pretty manageable but it sure didn't feel like May.
Holy Toledo > Cardiff > Toledo Face. Wish I had time for more.

So the bird was great yesterday. Got there at 11 and they were just opening tunnel and mineral basin. Worked my way far right towards boundary and lapped that like 8 times. On last two runs the visibility cleared and I got to ski like 1000 vert of untracked a few times for last runs. Insane great mid winter snow and only a few people following my cut track.
People were ducking rope at top of little cloud and trying to get first few hundred feet. Ski patrol busted them and we were lumped in with the idiots. Spent a bit of time explaining to her how I had cut a track earlier in the morning so I could ski that side.
For what was likely my last day inbounds it was the opus and very high stoke.
Pics to followI need to go to Utah.
Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?
So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....
Thanks BCSAR and POWMOW Ski Patrol for rescues

A little graupel over mostly supportable crust. Windy and kinda cold up high. A month ago I thought I was done snowboarding for the year, but if this weather keeps up I guess not. Fun day.

Not really the Wasatch, but we don't have a central Utah forum, tried to ski Mt. Baldy in the Tushars this weekend. Got turned around about 200 feet shy of the summit due to winds. I've never really experienced wind that made me lay down on my ice axe in order to not be blown off the ridge, but after the second gust of that I decided to put on skis and give'r. The sustained wind was bad enough but the 30 second long gusts were downright intense.

^^^Looks pretty cloudy in those pics? I'm assuming that if it's clear tonight and tomorrow night we should get a window of supportable above 8000 feet, even if it doesn't get below freezing?

38 looks to be about the dead, 6am minimum at 8000 feet the next couple of nights (according to the point forecasts).
It seems like I've had a few refreeze days with higher overnight temps, but that may be with a more consolidated, summer type snowpack. If anyone gets out tomorrow am, please report.

Pouring buckets at 7 am this morning at Alta. Seemed like it was raining pretty high, I bailed. My buddy took a nap and then drove back up for a main chute lap. Sounds like the best skiing was found in the areas that have seen a lot of traffic.

Some turns off Little Superior from a couple weeks back, it was smooth.

I woke up to cloud cover and light showers over much of the central Wasatch, so called an audible and decided to go to Deseret Peak as it looked clear and a bit cooler. I took my oldest son so that he could set the bootpack. Snow conditions were bad. Thin refreeze above 8500 feet, not supportable on east and north faces, south and west faces were nice, firm and supportable down to at least 9500.
North facing twin chutes had slid and the bed surface made for a nice, cramponable surface. But wouldn't have been fun to ski.
So we came down the Temple Couloir and it was smoothish, but a total slush pile.

On another note, what's up with Wasatch skiers? We started at an empty trailhead at 545 and we were on the peak by about 9ish. Didn't see a soul, not a big surprise given the conditions. I gave my son the lecture about us being too late for it being June, that we should've started by headlamp and been skiing east facing shortly after sunrise.
We passed 3 parties on the way down including one just starting at the trailhead at 11am! By that time the clouds were getting nice and thick for afternoon thunderstorms and there was no hope for any slush free travel. We could hear rocks starting to come down off the cliffs in the cirque as we were changing shoes and those folks were going to put themselves in the firing line?!

Heh, one of those later groups was probably my friends, hopefully not the 11am one. Was planning to do the twins with a buddy tuesday or wednesday but sounds like maybe not worth it based on your post? Maybe if its clearer by then it'll freeze harder.

The twins will need several melt freeze cycles to get smooth again. So will temple. Not likely to happen this week I wouldn’t think. Honestly, bag the peak early, ski the south face as it softens and then exit out whichever way is better.

no lack of a good refreeze last night, it was bulletproof until the sun hit it on the north side at least. wasn't sure after 4 days out of town what would be left of the south facing, though it looks like Cardiff/Toledo/Emmas/etc still go mostly to the road
pretty sunrise
took Sugarloaf down toward DC thinking about the couloir there but things were still very firm. saw debris from a pretty big wet slide, probably ran 1k' vertical or so
so went back up Baldy instead. the chutes were kinda chewed up, so skied whatever the line is skier's left of Main Chute, with the hard left exit above the cliff. I always thought this was "Dogleg" but what do I know. anything that looked smooth skied great, and by 7:45 the corn was going off where the sun had been warming it for an hour and change
looks like Sup still goes basically to the road as well, and Suicide is fat... gonna be up there later this week if there are any takers!

Way back in April Mallwalker and I started up Mineral at 6ish under a light rain to try and manage the heat forecasted for the day. We say nothing but wet slides all the way to the top of the ROD. We eventually found decent snow way the fuck up MillB but anything below 9.5 to 10k was soaked. On our way out at 11ish we passed a party of 3 casually slogging in the flats. They wanted to ski Moonbeam. We told them that all of it had slid in the flats already and they were about 2 weeks and/or 6 hours too late. They kept going because you know, wet slides just aren't a thing. That still seems like a better idea than starting up Deseret at 11am though...
BTW: which one is Temple? The W facing skinny couloir that is lookers right of the gun barrels and drains more or less directly into the approach gullies?
Also, I imagine the road is opened all the way to the summer TH at the boyscout campsite right?
