IKON Pass for Soli gives you a free UTA bus pass. What's to stop people from parking at Brighton and using the bus for a free 5 min. shuttle both ways?

As far as I can tell, nothing. You don't even need to take the bus both ways, you can just ski SolBright back to your car.

If this meaningfully alleviates BCC traffic this year I'll eat my shorts. Unless it was left out of the article, passholders seem to have zero incentive to carpool under the proposed plan. It's $150/yr whether you roll up solo every day or with 10 other people. They'll pay their $150 and continue their previous driving habits. Tourists will likely consider the parking fee a rounding error in the cost of their already very expensive vacation. At best this might modestly reduce the number of "casual local skier" vehicles, but that's a drop in the bucket.

I'm not a Solitude/Ikon passholder so I'm trying to maintain a sober, detached perspective about this. Obviously something needs to be done, but I find the company line that profits aren't the motivator and they're doing this primarily to relieve congestion and help the environment to be disingenuous at best. It's a greenwashed pile of bullshit that you can smell a mile away and SOC, USFS, UDOT and the CWC seem to be eating it up. If their press release said, "Yeah, we're charging for parking now. Supply and demand, bitch. Deal with it." I would at least respect the honesty. I fully support tolls on the roads, parking fees, and other private vehicle use fees--if they are part of a comprehensive plan to improve the mass transit system in the canyons and the fees are spent on supporting that system.

So we should just wait another 15 years while the utah government drags their feet on the way to a comprehensive plan??? Each individual ski area can only do so much to alleviate the traffic and try to encourage carpooling. It's a financial incentive to carpool. Apart from a comprehensive plan that is the best one of the four cottonwood canyon ski resorts can do.

It's not greenwashing, they're charging for parking in hopes that more people will carpool or take the bus. They've made a sliding scale to incentivize carpooling and mass transit to their resort, and they've chosen to donate a part of those profits to a nonprofit whose number one priority is air quality in Utah. Doesn't seem like their company line is saying anything else. They could have chosen to charge a flat rate for parking regardless of people in the vehicle and not donated a penny.

I guess we're just going to have to agree to disagree that it's not greenwashing an Alterra cash-grab. It's certainly entirely their prerogative as a private business to charge or not charge for parking. Shit, Snowbird has been charging for parking at Octoberfest for a couple years already. I'm honestly shocked they're not charging for ski parking yet.

Personally, I don't think the pricing structure seems like it will be that effective at increasing carpooling, but we'll see. I also doubt it will increase bus use that much (with the exception of people parking at Brighton and using the bus as a free shuttle to skirt the parking fee) since the bus system is already overcapacity at peak times. But, again, we'll see. Free bus rides have always been a pass perk, but they're talking it up like it's a new thing. To me, that reeks.

The percentage of parking revenue they're going to donate to Breathe Utah was not disclosed in the article. I doubt it's that big or they would have said so. I'd rather see them use that money to pay UTA to run more buses or run their own shuttle service.

Here is my review of the new TGR film after returning from the premier at Red Butte

    1. Despite the extremely woke POW ad (virtue signaling ) at the beginning of the film this movie certainly had a giant carbon footprint between the gratuitous heli shots , boats , Gas guzzling RVs and trucks featured heavily in the film. The hypocrisy and politicization of the winter sports community is not a good look.

    2. Was basically the same movie as every other TGR film over the past decade

    3. No true “banger “ segments except for Kais segment to close out the film

    4. The urban segment was extremely weak , there were better urban segments that were released in 2005.

All In all 4/10 stars , nice to spend an evening at red butte watching people slide around on mountains but the stoke factor was not very high.

It’s clear TGR has pivoted from a serious film company at the avant garde of the sport to a lifestyle and marketing company for the outdoor community , which I applaud as a business move . However , if you want to see a real ski movie I would attend the Level 1 premier in a few weeks

My take on all recent TGR flicks is jaded, but Sir Heady you should have sat with us.
Our view must have been better. Agree with the meh urban, but like you say this was classic TGR.
High octane, full throttle skiing in high consequence terrain performed by world class athletes.
I said "wow" many times last night. More than usual for ski porn.
I thought top shelf skiing skills were displayed by all.
Mcnutt for the win of best male performance this year...Lentsch in the running.
Elyse or Angel for the win of best female performance.
They fed off each other. Maybe a shared title?
Interesting they didn't show Elyse's season ending crash, it happened same run as Angel's.
    Kai is legit...

We were on our way to a wedding photo op in the Lone Peak Cirque in our rich buddies helo yesterday evening.
When we saw the lights and felt the bass rumble from the direction Red Butte.
When we sat the bird down on top of a sage grouse nest to take in the show...
We realized it was sold out!
Discussions were held with those that make things happen and we slid in the side door like the overpriviledged assholes that we are.

Having seen every TGR flick since the beginning of time I have to agree with SirHeady ( not that I ever disagree with his astute observations)...

    SOOOOOOOOOO FUUUUUCCCCCKKKKIIIIINNNNNNNGGGGGG LLLLLAAAAAAAAAMMMMMEEEEE!!!!

    The DJ sucked.
    The opening band sucked
The giveaways were meh, I mean who wants a set of bent chets or volkl 108s? Shit Skis. Or brewing beer with the pros. Lame.
And the crowd, don't get me started.
This guy sitting next to me would not shut up, talking story about all those pros, giving funny anecodotes like he really knew them.
Cmon mannnnn there is no way you know all those pros? The nerve of some people.
Too crowded to get autographs, get change for my nickel or do a pro callout.
I had been practicing all day "Angel I can't believe your a pro, I ski so much radder than you"
Stoke was so low in the movie and the sold out venue its all we could talk about on the helly ride back to the Chalet du Dibbs.
TGR has really fell off, especially since Tanner Hall died of broken ankles in that unfortunate accident at Chad's Gap.
We should all go over to the Warren Miller Entertainment Forums and take that place over...

I did stand in line with Todd Jones waiting to pee. He had to pee too. I felt close to him. No I mean he was two spots ahead of me. He saw me looking and he was like “I don’t go for that kind of bathroom thing”. I was like no your cool and gave the bro nod. He was like sweet avoided that and we watched more of the movie.
I did get to hang with cool peeps and show was good vibes and high stoke. Now the clowns one table over we’re all bro brah hiked up wolverine in my pajamas and I don’t see why it’s so core. But his buddy was like yah I snowboarded Everest. And he was like that’s cool I snowboarded at Alta and so on. Really they would not shut up and I thought why go to the show and then I realized they were from park city.

Yea, until there is a transportation option other than four buses per hour with 28 seats people are going to drive. I have no desire to wear my boots standing on a bus when it might be an hour, or two hours up or down. It’s one thing to be up the canyon with a closure and waiting for the road to open with a personal vehicle. It’s another thing having to ride a bus at 7:00 PM, standing for two hours with ski clothes on packed like sardines.

While people bemoan the canyon crawl, I do think its important to remember that it is a difficult problem to solve. The traffic is only really bad on Saturday, Holidays, and unknown sporadic powder days. 85+ percent of the time, there is no canyon traffic and its practically a ghost town. Even on crazy Saturdays, I have seen crowds virtually disappear from 1-4 pm. Anyway, what I am getting at is its hard for an outside third party to say that increased infrastructure is "needed" when the pain points are overall small and only an inconvenience to the morning weekend warriors. Not saying we shouldn't fix it, just that its not like we are dealing with this day in day out like for a 9-5 commute.

In other news, mountains were looking more and more like winter today. Snow level dropped down to at least 7k feet. Should get dry and warm up but definitely feels good to officially be in Fall. Time for chili, cornbread, and some apple/pumpkin pie.

I agree entirely. We all suffer from really short memories. Last season Alta had measurable snowfall on 50% of the days they were open. We had some low snow years five & six years ago so traffic was not nearly as bad. I also feel like we had a number of big days on Saturday & Sunday's when crowds were the worse. I understand the staffing issue UTA has of not being able to react when there is a big storm but once they can't get up the canyon, schedules go out the window and travel times increase the buses are pretty much screwed. We will all see what "solutions" the CWC comes up with but as I have said before expenditures of large sums of money for a problem that exists 20 or 30 times a year IME is unwarranted. I understand the reduce pollution argument but my guess is if you did a traffic count on I-15 any week day you would find far more pollution in five minutes compared to what is generated in LCC & BCC. Lets be honest, a train with the necessary avalanche sheds would be billions with a B. Maybe a gondola for a few hundred million might work if you can justify the expenditure at the expense of other more worthy transportation projects in the valley that have a benefit every day of the year. In the meantime I am ok with what we have.

While it's true that a train or a gondola would be very expensive, doubling bus frequencies on the weekends would be relatively cheap. Same with building expanded park and rides.

Staffing of public transportation is always a challenge. Peak times are early AM, late afternoon’s with not much in between. I would guess UTA does not have part time drivers so how do you meet peak demand?
