Those two are complete animals. Very inspirational
Just in the last two years, both jim and hilaree have made some amazing climbs and ski descents.

Let me know when they do it on a cold night in Stoke.

Jimmy chin was with them? On skis? Sucking on gas? Remember his alpine style attempt of the hornbein(sp?)?

Extremely cool!
I clearly know nothing about mountaineering in the Himalayas...but that Instagram post states it is about 45-50 degrees sustained, which is steep but not crazy steep. Its not like Hornbein on Everest that pushes 60. It doesn't look super narrow or overly technical from the photos. Why did such an aesthetic, incredibly long line like that it sit so long without a ski descent? Seems like there are enough bad-asses in the world that this would have been ticked off already. Is it solid ice like 99.999% of the time or what?

This has been a coveted line for years. However, all the strong teams have been going during the regular Everest climbing season, when you share the same sherpas and camps as teams on Everest. The launching point for Lhotse is Everest camp 3. Logistically it makes more sense, the weather is warmer, you are not alone up there, etc., but the Lhotse line has been too thin and icy in May for past attempts to succeed.
Jamie Laidlaw's solo attempt 12? years ago in May might have succeeded, but he had O2 problems high up, aborted, and skied most of it without supplemental oxygen. (It was really icy and quite the trip to ski sans O2).
These two used the same tactics that they did last year on Makalu; go post monsoon when lines are phat with monsoon snow. It worked! I've always wondered why no one was attempting these lines post monsoon when they are in better condition.
Hudge ups for Jim and Hilaree!Last edited by telefreewasatch; 10-04-2018 at 09:59 AM.

Jump turns at 28k feet.
Fuck that.
I need some more coffee. Got tired just thinking about it. Humans are incredible. (Sometimes.)
