The death count at a USA based European style access it whenever at your own risk type place would be quite high I bet.

Do you mean chowder? Certainly the past week has been fantastic, but I imagine the greater Darrington area generally has rather challenging snow conditions.

Too steep and cliffy to be practical as even another Alpental. I opened it up in Hillman and there are multiple lines of 45+ pitches(implying big cliffs). It seems like there are only two areas that would be practical without FS impediments considered - North Cascades east of the crest, including Lake Wenatchee (but not really, need more highway access or Wenatchee airport has to get some better connections to hubs), or Goat rocks(new highway needed).

Goat rocks is all wilderness and rez. And too far from where the people are.

    This is important.

We already have a ski area 3 hours in good weather/traffic from Puget Sound where hardly anyone from Seattle goes.

With the exception of one chair I shared with some mountain ops folks, everyone I rode the lift with there yesterday was from greater Seattle...

Anecdotal and statistically insignificant, but I think more people head in that direction than is widely believed.

If you stick to the 2 hour requirement I think the only undeveloped area that meets the criteria(besides FS land which is basically everywhere), you're only left with eastern Olympics, which is 2 hours to Olympia and Tacoma in some cases(and other places with ferry access).

edit: and it seems all the easily accessible places in Olympics are "too steep". Dungeness valley is the only one that's semi-reasonable for road & parking lot construction, but that doesn't meet the 2 hour criteria.

It really is the only realistic option. Every other option is a billion dollar investment when all said and done. Requires selling condos to the east coast. To make that feasible I think that's a North Cascades on their east side with their improved climate + reliance on Wenatchee getting better connections.

Part of the Goat Creek drainage N of Crustal is on the edge of Wilderness and has some viability.

SR410 is maxed out as is though, as is US2.

200" seasons from middle of Rainier shadow? I think the FS is a bigger obstacle than the roads imo.

Might be a dumb idea but Alpine lakes off from middle fork of the snoqualmie? Piss off a lot of backcountry skiers. A four season road and buildings would never get approved.

While a bit low and shallow there is already a four season highway approved (and never funded) between greenwater and Naches along the current FS 70
