3 weeks of Pizza, Pasta, Seafood, Gelato and Grappa

It's been almost 20 years since I've been to Italy.

I have a lot of catching to do with some of my favorite foods and drink.
I'm going to eat and drink like it's 1999 - that was the last time I was there

So what food or drink couldn't you get enough of in Italy?

The weird and wildly varied and variable herbal grappas. Local pinot nero.

Yes, grappa. So much of it we never see here. Squid pasta is good. Will you be there in November, which is olive harvest time? Nothing like fresh virgin press. Italians do steak real good. Of course, just eating cured meats and cheeses is enough most times.

All depends on where you'll be in Italy. Pizza in Naples. Amatriciana or Carbonara in the greater Rome area. Risotto or Gnocchi in the Milan/Turin area. Branzino on the Adriatic. Tuna on the Med. Cured meats & cheeses everywhere. Regardless of location drink the local wines and aperitifs/digestifs (not just Grappa.)

One of my most memorable simple meals was Spaghetti alla Vongole (Clam sauce) in Salerno Province (Casalvelino.) So good, so fresh tasting. Lots of tiny clams that had literally been raked that morning.

    YummY
Going to be in Sorrento for 4 days and some Spaghetti Alla Vongole will be an absolute.

I'm starting in Calabria to enjoy the beach then off to the Amalfi. I end up in Rome for a week then taking the train to Florence for a day and hoping to have a steak Florentine.

    I'm stoked

Vivoli in Florence for gelato. No where else. After your Uffizi visit.

    You're welcome.

I was there a couple years ago, I think my daughter ate nothing but pizza for 4 weeks. I liked hitting the grocery store for prosciutto (and other similar stuff), cheese & fresh bread.

Always order the house wine at restaurants, it's typically really good and inexpensive.

Don't forget to pick up a dick shaped bottle of lemoncello.

If you see any Mirto is pretty yummy, distilled from myrrh berries. I only saw it on Sardinia.
    You are what you eat.

    See https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...ps-Summer-2018 .

The last one is the Panorama Refugio under the Dantercepies lift, just up from Selva Wolkenstein toward the Passo Gardena (I think). Great food and drink with an awesome little play area for kids with a ton of toys. We figured out a cool train route from Bad Gastein south into Italy that was a blast, oozing ski areas and history.

Too bad. Most of my trips are N. Italy. Anyway, because you asked for what I couldn't get enough of... The tortellini at Restaurante Alla Borsa just East of Verona. Very thin pasta, perfect fillings, perfect complimentary accompaniments.

If you go to Florence I highly recommend Buca Lapi for steak. It's famous for a reason.

But the steak is otherwordly, I loved it and reviews agree with my perception. It's one of those "event" places. Loud, busy, tons of character, people having fun and celebrating. Waiters giving you shit, etc.

Enotica Pinchiorri is anything but loud.

I doubt it's remotely affordable now, but we had a super meal there aeons ago when we had a hotel room right on the Arno and did the museum overdose. Telemaco Signorini at the Pitti was impressive.

Apparently this place is *still* in business in Florence. In '99 it was a great place to get a panino and a glass of wine:

That looks pretty good. When we were there the old Italian owner of our hotel recommended Perseus (https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaura...e_Tuscany.html) as the place to go for bistecca alla fiorentina. It did not disappoint. They serve it rare, period. If you're not into that don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

If you want to have a more relaxed dinner in the countryside outside of Florence, I highly recommend this place...
