    The mind bending thing is less the animation as such but the underlying model, no? it is a pretty big deal for any kind of avalanche related research to make it into a nature publication. basically they managed to model anticracks in porous materials (like snow) better than people have been able to do in the past, thereby potentially improving understanding of the physics of avalanche propagation quite significantly. relevant for practical skiing purposes? probably not. relevant for the scientists in that particular, highly specific field? very.
