Fun show last night at Champlain Valley Expo. Mrs P and I met up with Vt-F and ml242’s bro.

The set list was a little weak, but there were definitely highlights. Thunder that closed set 1 was fantastic as were June Apple and Must Be Seven in the second set. We all left with a chuckle as If Your Hair’s Too Long was the closer.

This being Vermont, by law a Phish cover must be played.

Tonight my coworker told me his ex gf is now living in Nashville dating this billy strings guy.

    Small world.

Huh. I'm actually gonna see him tomorrow, does he want me to pass along a message? Like yell out in a quiet moment? "Billy, tell Jennifer Tony still loves her!" or maybe something less positive?

Saw him again yesterday for the second time (also the second time in 2 weeks). The first show was at the Newport Folk Festival's toned-down 2021 version, and it was straight-up bluegrass, maybe in deference to the venue/history? I love bluegrass, and they were very good but honestly I was wondering what people were going on about with this cat, I've seen better bluegrass shows.

Which is not a knock, I used to live near the Birchmere in Virginia and go there a lot in the '80s and '90's and all the bluegrass greats played there. Still play there. Shit I saw Bill Monroe there and he basically invented bluegrass. I saw Ralph Stanley there. etc. etc.

Two weeks ago it was a really top-notch bluegrass show, period. After yesterday I get it. Completely different than the first time. Jammed the fuck out of some songs I don't know the names of. It was outside or he woulda torn the roof off the place. Pretty amazing show. Bought tickets to another show today. I'm in. Now I gotta learn the names of some of the songs.

I’ve been really enjoying “Fire Line” and it’s developing jams from recent shows.

Had not seen BMFS since Pine Creek 2019. 150ish people. Last night at a sold out Kettlehouse Amp. 4,250 people. Amazing where these guys have come. The crowd energy is still there. There's still that vibe in the air that this band is really doing something special.

    Set 1:
    Red Daisy
A Robin Built a Nest on Daddy's Grave (The Stanley Brothers cover)
    Watch It Fall
    Bronzeback>
How Mountain Girls Can Love (The Stanley Brothers cover)
    Enough to Leave
    Dust in a Baggie
All Time Low (Widespread Panic cover)
John Deere Tractor (Larry Sparks cover)
Run Down (Jeff Austin cover) >
    Pretty Daughter (Danny Barnes cover)

    Set 2:
Come Down the Mountain Katie Daly ([traditional] cover)
    While I'm Waiting Here >
    Pyramid Country >
    Ole Slew-Foot (Johnny Horton cover)
    Show Me the Door
    Montana Cowboy (Hot Rize cover)
    Home
A Letter to Seymour (Greensky Bluegrass cover)
    Peggy-O ([traditional] cover)
    Hide & Seek

    Encore:
    Fire on My Tongue >
Big Mon (Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys cover) >
Salt Creek (The Doc Watson Family cover) >
Roll On Buddy Roll On (Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys cover)

He's mixing in lots of covers it appears. He did pearl jam, temple of the dog, string cheese here in seattle to name a few.

Unfortunately can’t make bv and super bummed about it, got breakthrough delta’d. I saw billy and the kids at red rocks in July and it was the best show I’ve been to in recent years that I can think of, billy strings killed it there he’s so damn good.

Thanks for the link. I can now state with certainty that it was around the 12:00-13:30 mark in While I'm Waiting here that my mind left my body.

    Hell yes.

The All Time Low was huge and had the pit rocking hard. I think my personal highlight was the Hide and Seek. That song is just the fucking shit.

New album is out! So good. Another Grammy for the boys?

The SLC show on the 22nd was fire. I've been familiar and have seen 1.5 billy shows (lady got too stoned) previously. Enjoyed both, but this one really showed what the hype is about. I'm patiently waiting for the BMFS metal side project, too.

He plays covers of local bands in certain venues (i.e. Phish here in VT, PJ in Seattle, etc).

Hope tour life isn’t too much of a crazy blur for the boys and they enjoy the ride!

Well I was walking down the street just the other day
I had a double headed nickel and a bill to pay
There was bubblegum a’blistered on the hot cement
And I was waiting like patience on a monument
Well I rolled a little spliff and tightened up my shoes
And I went to the corner where I lit the fuse
Disgusted by the loneliness I couldn’t lose
I sat and wrote a little verse to the ‘rona blues
I said I always wanna do the things I used to do
But everybody got a job and works enough for two
We could have a little party at the end of the day
But everybody had a family and moved away
So I’m sitting with a paper soakin’ on my tongue
And feeling better than I did back when I was young
Now I’m seeing music that nobody else can see
With all the colors like a symphony surrounding me”

I agree that kettlehouse show was one of the best shows I have ever seen. That is a sick venue too. We had front row seats that were only like $5 dollars more than the lawn and looked right over the pit. Dude just fucking rips on the guitar.

Hell yeah. He plays Kentucky songs in Kentucky and all sorts of nice well appointed treats. Kid is on a roll. Hope he can keep his shit together. Big paychecks and fame can cause trouble.
