Who said anything about him being the best drummer? WTF is the matter with people? Why not just enjoy the music., and if you don't, you can start your own thread about how much Dave and the Foo suck.

I'm not that old. I probably fall squarely into the foo fighters demographic - middle aged white guy, raised on nirvana. And I still like nirvana, but foo fighters definitely aren't nirvana.

All awesome drummers, but I prefer Dave Abbruzzese (PJ drummer on albums 1-3, maybe no code?)

Fine, but that's a lot different than saying "everything he's put out in the past 20 years is cookie cutter pop-schlock." That opinion sounds trite and uninformed.

No, it sounds like hyperbole, which is what these forums run on.

Dude has been selling out stadiums everywhere he goes for years and he should have stuck to drums. Could only imagine what he would have become if he had a different manager.

Britney Spears sells out stadiums too. Maybe if Grohl had stuck to drums, he wouldn't be a corporate whore producing pop rock for the tasteless masses.

Novoselic hasn't sold out shit since Nirvana, but Google says he's still worth $50M, so I'm pretty sure Grohl would be just fine if he hadn't sold his soul.

    Grohl is the shit

^X2. Seems like a good dude, I wish him success but I don’t get the mass, mass appeal. But I love me some Big Me, great tune.

We are just voicing our opinions we care not to share with our friends IRL. Especially the ones who have paid a 4 figure sum to go to their arena shows over the years. Internet!

    exactly.

wrt the mass appeal, i think that has something to do with the fact that it’s not particularly edgy or interesting. the foo fighters are like Subway sandwiches, probably won’t kill you, available everywhere, but nothing to get too excited about.

Dave Grohl is the Paul McCartney of my generation. Crazy musical talent, and technically proficient with many instruments, but he's no John Lennon.

Nah. He's a great songwriter. I loved Nirvana, but over time I have come to appreciate the Foo's body of work more. NOT the radio songs. That's their weakest stuff.

    Let's see ...

    Master of great hooks
    Plays every instrument
    Doesn't take himself too seriously

Yup. DG is alright in my book.

^^^ that's where I was going with the Paul analogy (except the "serious" part). His music is basically ear candy.

All this. Music doesn't need to be serious and life altering to be worthy. Sometimes it is better when it doesn't try to be all that. I mean the worst thing Grohl could have done would be to try and replicate Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. He was smart enough to know that wasn't going to work. So why not write hooky power-pop songs for the masses to enjoy? And for what they are his songs are a cut above.

And Grohl has a distinct guitar sound that I like, mostly achieved through his use of open chords in his songwriting. His technique is explained here. I like it. Not complicated but it sets the FF apart from the crowd.
