I’ll kick this in here:
Two dudes in a Mustang with no chains got stuck in Woodfords near KW. Hilarious. I was asked if I was gonna help by the cashier as we watched them running around the highway and even they themselves getting stuck in snow (their person needed chains lol). I said, “No, they will learn a great lesson and thank me for not helping... someday... long in the future... prob not. Bye.”

I am for using R3 on holiday weekends with snowfall like this. I think it would solve a lot of the cars getting stuck and spinning issues as well as reduce traffic. Classic case of lowest common denominator. If you know what you are doing, no chains with awd and proper tires is more than enough for storms like this but on holiday weekends that bring out all those people who can’t drive in the snow, chain up even with awd.

Tahoe's traffic issues are national news. Just saw this in my local paper. https://www.timesunion.com/renotahoe...s-13622370.php

I agree it's becoming a public safety problem. What if something terrible were to happen while local pd, chp, and medical first responders are all taking care of people driving in conditions they're unprepared for. Like fuckin ay
Tend to agree with BGillis. I see nobody has brought up the *touchy* subject of 'locals' who work in the bay area and have a vacation home up here... sure that's gonna be a hit with this crowd

"Avoid the area of Boatworks Mall in Tahoe City, 760 N. Lake Blvd. Shots have been fired, this is an active and evolving incident. Repeat, avoid the area and yield to emergency personnel."

I used to drive my FWD Tacoma over 88 all the time with standard M+S and no chains. I grew up in update NY where I had to drive in snow, slush, ice for 4 months each year. Never had an accident or issue.
Even with good snow tires, a lot of these yahoos don’t know how to drive their AWD in snow.

Snow tire requirements would make differences. I’ve seen accidents happen in slow motion on days like this where cars are creeping on a banked turn and drifting sideways because of ice and m&s tires while I’m staying still (or slowly dodging sliding cars) with snows on my car. Better transit options would help a lot, too.

It’s worth it. This is the year we’ll think back many years from now with great fondness.

Snow looks good.
We have to consider the businesses dependent on the roads being open. They pay a lot of taxes. As hectic as it is chance of fatality is probably less with traffic crawling along. It's probably more dangerous with monster trucks barreling along in mixed traffic.

To present a counterpoint, the most ideal move would be to drive up Monday after the storm clears, particularly if you are doing backcountry. Your drive will be much shorter, weather will be better and snow in the backcountry should be prime. Now, I know that a lot of people can’t do that but just throwing it out there.

Looks amazing up there right now. FWIW having grown up on the east coast I have never seen poorer drivers, and particularly poorer winter drivers, than the drivers in the bay area. The delusion of uniqueness (ill be fine in my toyota 2wd minivan with bald tires on 50...) is way too widespread in America today.

I'd get rid of 17, and replace with 16. I know it is Hersey, but 17 had a shit ton of wet snow and so many storms that ended warm. The entire winter of 16 was fucking sleeper. I had maybe 10 sleeper pow days at KW, no road issues, cold snow. I'll take that any day over 5 foot dumps of cement. 8" of blower for the win in my book, especially when the sub surface is soft.

No worries. I do agree that a driver makes the most difference. Snow tires are great but they still don’t make a car handle on snow like it does on dry pavement and so many people don’t realize how slippery snow is. I wish every snow driver would find an empty road, hit the brakes and see how long it actually takes to stop in the snow.
