I personally like the stoke on this thread but I think that a dose of bitching about the reality of skiing in Tahoe is also appropriate. We need to remember that most people who post on this thread are not "average" skiers. They know resorts and Tahoe very well. For example, when skier666 talks about his 5 hour drive home, that 5 hour drive home probably didn't happen during peak traffic.
When skiers like skier666 (sorry for picking on you, I love your videos and stoke!) says that the drive was worth it, what probably gets lost on a lot of people is that he has local knowledge of Squaw that allows him to maximize his skiing. The average skier might sit in 8 hours of traffic and then get caught up in horrible lift lines or even get turned around (Kirkwood, cough, cough). I doubt that for them the drive was "worth it."
As I said before, I love the stoke but I think people bitching about 2.5 hour drives from Squaw to Truckee or Pioneer Road being backed up half way to the Casinos has a place here too.

Nailed it...the stuff I ski and say is 'good' probably only resonates to people on this forum. Case in point, walking over rocks to get that last extra pitch in the alternates...some fresh snow, three steeps turns, a hoot out of my mouth, and it totally makes my run. If I get a few laps like that, my day has crossed into positive territory.
However, growing up with a place in South Lake, the 80 commute is still new to me. My old weekly worry was weather the Carson Spur would be closed on Sunday, haha. We chose Squaw because 1) dad has fun skiing there (even if it just was KT and Red Dog, 2) tons of ski programs to get the kids into (probably most in Tahoe I'd imagine), 3) even though the Village is manufactured and lacks charm, it still has more for a family as far as eating, apres skis, buying new gloves after losing them every week for the kids, etc.
Funny, my dad keeps forwarding articles on how skiing is going the way of golf on how families aren't skiing anymore. Seems the opposite at Squaw.

Skier666, while I love your Squaw videos, I do miss the ones you did from Kirkwood. I do understand why you chose Squaw over Kirkwood with kids.
I don’t know if any admins can publish this data, but I would be really interested in the number of people looking at this forum. If that can be geo located, even better.

I say keep the pictures and videos coming. Little extra motivation to pack up the wife and kids to get to the snow for a day or two.

I have never ever had an issue finding untracked lines in Tahoe, especially south lake. One of my old favorite haunts that I would never post about is now the Meyers ski resort so I’ve moved on.
Our world is pretty fucked right now. Backcountry skiing is a powerful positive thing. It helped get me/keep me off shooting dope if that helps explain. The more people that get to experience that vibe, the better our world will be. Case in point, 99% of folks I run into in the bc are good happy people.
And from what I’ve seen, we just post pictures without detailed location explanations. Those that know..........know. Those that don’t are always welcome to pm.

I know I'm weird, but much as I love to ski, I don't get any particular enjoyment from hearing about someone's great day of skiing--unless that someone is like BettyDee, may she rest in peace, and if someone has a great day when I decided to stay home--well that's no fun. I like a really good photo--like the 3rd one above, an unusually good video--like Candide's, but I don't go to ski movies or read about skiing, except here. I don't post about my great day, except maybe a line or two so I don't sound like I only complain, because I'm sure you all would find it boring as hell. I don't need stoke to get me excited about skiing. That comes naturally. I don't want to discourage anyone else from posting about their great day--like I said, I'm weird, and I think most people enjoy the posts, so don't stop on my account (not that you would). I seriously doubt whether posting about good skiing has any effect on traffic.
I do think that if we're going to complain about the traffic--which after all we're all a part of--it would be good to have some solutions. I think there is a critical mass building to do something about it and people are starting to look at solutions. The more ideas there are the better then chance that something will happen.

One easy solution for traffic would be for resorts to offer perks to carpoolers. Maybe if you have 4 or more skiers in a car, you get priority parking or a food voucher. This would be a win for resorts since it would increase the number of guests on peak days.
For here, we could start a Tahoe carpool thread where we can easily arrange carpools.
Any other ideas?

harder, but worthwhile solution: a single bus only lane on 89 between tahoe city and truckee in the middle of the road, and busses run every 10 minutes. I'd easily park n ride from tahoe city if it could beat the traffic into the resort. Adding a single lane to 89 wouldn't be that capital intensive either.

Didn’t I read about the Existing bus system not getting enough drivers to keep a full schedule? Who’s going to drive in a massive new system?

Yes, we call this 'blowing up your own spot'. I agree with TahoeJ that TGR doesn't move the needle wrt da social medz. Think about IG...THAT is a major problem for not just overcrowding ski lines but also wrecking ecological damage on previously rarely visited places. "Cool wildflowers, let's stomp on them for a SELFIE OMG!"
No bitching here. Out of my 22 seasons in Tahoe, there has always been traffic superimposed upon population growth. It is what it is. Crowds and kooks got you down? Get more creative, in better shape, start earlier, or ride sketchier s#$t. We put in about 20K vert in the bc this past week and ran into one group of friends on just one of the four days. We did see some sweet bear tracks though!

IG is definitely 100x's more influential than all forums combined. I opened an account because it's an absolute gold mine for beta. But then I get sucked in and posted stoke myself which I'm conflicted with. I like to share stoke because other people's posts are what have motivated me to do most the rad shit I've done throughout the years. But one's own ego stroking for "like" dopamine is a big part of it. That's why I constantly delete my old IG posts. I don't like a paper trail to my favorite spots lol. I barely even lurk on here for beta anymore let alone post pictures.
I do like anything that has to do with jaded locals and bitching cuz that's right up my alley. I can't wait for the next recession/financial bubble that is coming this year. Most of these people will be too worried about finding a job than to come to Squaw with their family. And prices for shit will go down!

^^ If only.
Thank God it's going to snow this weekend. Although, it's going to cause more traffic for us to bitch about - we'll have to keep a close eye on the stoke to bitching ratio. My wife wanted us to drive home Sunday night which I emphatically vetoed ("how many times do you want me to say I told you so during the 5-6 hour drive?"). Plus, let's be honest, the Super Bowl is a lot more fun to watch with beer. They should really make Monday a holiday, but then of course traffic would be worse! ;-)

Without a traffic shit-show it's only 2.5 hours, not so bad. But as you know, that's been discussed as an option - just not wild about pulling the trigger on a new house right before the recession hits (already done that once!). After prices come down, on the other hand...

Sell the old house before they go down, rent back for a few months, then buy at the crash. Winning.
I came for the stoke, but stick around for the bitching.
I used to post stoke, but now we. I get a chance to ski, I just ski. Don’t bother with phone pics and don’t carry the camera anymore. Maybe when I get five days sans family in February. Hope it snows, but it will be fun even if it doesn’t.
