I've never slept at the Donner Summit rest area; I have tried to sleep at other ones on cross country trips but the truck engines, which stay on all night, kept me awake.
Interesting mght be closed for the storm? They were both open a couple weeks ago. 8 hour rule was never strictly enforced. Gold run worked well to crash for a few hours and then beat the rush up in the morning.

Sno park is still by far the best deal for car camping. Tough to beat.

Just changed to all snow here at 4900. Here's hoping it doesn't warm up as much as predicted tomorrow and Sat.

Thanks all for the beta re: sleeping at Donner Summit. My car is newer (2015 Outback), so it would be weather tight. The noise and lights might be more than I want to deal with, however. Will probably choose a plan B.

I've been using Olympic Bootworks but I'm starting to have my doubts--seem like they rather sell new liners than modify boots to solve fit issues. This happened to me and to my son, although neither of us bit. I've heard a recommendation for Tahoe Sports Hub in downtown Truckee, this from a Squaw patroller. The nice thing about Olympic is they're first come first serve, rather than appointments, which also means you might have a wait, but they have free beer; they're also very friendly. Haven't used Starthaus for boots but to me they seem to have a bit of a snobby attitude when I've used them for other stuff. They do boot work by appointment. I don't know if Sports Hub does appointments or drop in.

Sports Hub has a pedorthist on staff, IIRC. I've had good service for a reasonable price without attitude at Starthaus, and recently. YMMV.

They do appointments exactly so that you don’t wait. And when you do have an appointment, they’ll spend the necessary amount of time working with you. They’re pretty thorough and overall very good but it is dependent on who you get - like every where else, there are great bootfitters and not so great fitters.

Also like Tahoe Sports Hub. They have helped me with fitting my current boots and didn’t try to sell me on a liner or a boot off their rack.

I really like Bootworks, and they have good people. They definitely have a formula: Get their insoles, get zipfits, then work on fit, but they do good work. I wish they would do appointments though, I end up spending a huge amount of time there when getting work done because whoever is helping me is always multitasking. As long as you have the time, great work is done.

Granite Chief is supposed to have a couple of good fitters too.

All three shops mentioned have pretty good local street cred, coming from folks that make their living on their skis/boots. Obviously each shop has their own following, you tend to go where you like the people and have had good results. Haus has always had a rep of leaning a bit more to the racer end of the scale. Sports Hub has come a long way in a short time with the newer ownership and has solid local following. Some of the old crew from Granite (and several from S Haus) have matriculated to Blue Zone Sports next to Save Mart. Their old customers have followed along. Oly Bootworks has skills, promo and great beer...
    I still miss Cosmo. Q- What's a pedorthist??

Plus, Oly bootworks likes to show the unedited version of Hot Dog since supposedly the building they’re in is where the wet t shirt contest was filmed... so bonus.

Re appts at Olympic--you can make arrangements with Buck the owner to come in preseason after they have their stock, so I didn't give the full story. Also, they've done a fair amount of free work for me well beyond 1 year from purchase, both on footbeds they made me and on boots. I still think they're a good shop, I would just prefer to do mods before a new liner, which will be needed eventually. They wanted to sell my son zipfits for a pair of boot with less than 10 days on them. I don't see why you should have to buy a new liner for a new, top end boot. Anyway, we both got our problem solved without new liners so I don't want to make a big deal about it.

Oly Bootworks building was the old Lone Star. I can't even start- the statute of limitations isn't up yet.
Well- there WAS one blizzard night with a live band. An altercation started and a guy got stabbed twice right in front of the lead guitar player- the band stopped and asked for "any available patrolmen to stage front". The injured party got dragged off and the band started up again.

Is Buck the guy who used to own/manage Java Summit Sports in Soda Springs? Same name.

wolfy, pedorthist = person with board certification in foot biomechanics and fixing them. Not essential for a good fit, but definitely can't hurt. Especially if you have particularly messed up feet. Friend of a friend made me some really nice carbon custom insoles. He's a pedorthist. As is skiing-in-jackson on the board here.

Shit show unfolding. Joined the pain train at Meyers at 7:10AM. 6 lot full at 8:15AM. Well, sort of. I parked right up front, and there at least 8 spots right up there, and cars are packed only one deep, but all over the fucking place, about 3-4’ apart. Total shit show. Corral full at 8:30. It’s like skiing Squaw. Hopefully they open at 9AM, as they have their team and film crew loading to get their footage. Thanks for putting customers first Vail.

    If Vail
Is losing money because the powder hounds arrive early and fill the lots, then fucking get your staff out there before they arrive and double your numbers. Is t that some managers job.

6:30 Snow phone this morning was claiming gusts over 100mph this morning. Quick look and winds subsided at 4am and were 15mph as of report time. Fucking calm as shit right now.

Was sunny, but clouds now moving in.

Anyone out here today. Rolling solo, I think.

Snow is decent. Not blower. Crowd is 50/50 KW/Vail. Showdown.

    The more you know.

Went cruising past main lodge at Rose only to find out that the website at 730 was wrong. IT needs an upgrade.

Got in line for NW and made it on by 915. Looks like we are only skiing the top 8” of this storm.
