^^ Fun, I've always wanted to do that (I've done hut trips but bringing your own tent and setting up camp where you want is appealing). Seems like a good year for it with the low snow line.

Thanks for all the enthusiasm guys! Its been too good of a season out there, and this just happened to be another fantastic Saturday. Unbelievable how many there have been this year, and hopefully a few more to come.

Thanks for the story Gimpy, sounds like you guys made the right choice. We were experiencing a lot of warming too, but decided to push on since the north face seemed cool enough still. Glad we did!

The upper sections of the face are actually not as steep as I thought, so I would also hit it in firmer conditions. Prior to our ski up there, I had always thought it was just puckering steeps above cliffs. But now we know.

Ever heard of anyone else actually skiing it? You been out on any other big lines out in the Rubies?

had a bear canister and then there were some good overhung trees to throw a bear line. we didn't take any chances, there were fresh prints all over from a male bear (or cubless female) that had just woken up from a long nap. He/she was rubbing on all the trees to get the molt off.

We dug 10 feet down to the lake to try to find water and got none, so ended up having to melt it off a tarp for the trip.

Are you saying that the ice on the lake was covered with 10 ft of snow?

I don't think there was a lake. It felt like maybe it was supposed to be a lake but was really a vernal pond and the snow soaked up all the water. I dunno, I've never really had this problem finding water before, but I'm also not camping so high up on such a big snowpack.

Even the massive creek in summit city canyon is covered and buried. It's definitely flowing, but it's under a dozen feet of snow

you need a real lake. this time of year you just need to go down two or three feet to get to water that sits on top of the ice layer. needs no filtering either.

Dang Gnar That’s a fair bit of dry tooling, done it a couple times when the snow went down the valley floor and it’s still a big day. Curious if you found any kind of use trail in there. Poked around riding my bike back behind that private community a couple weeks ago and could not find one. And if this was yesterday how much new snow was out there?

~6” wind blown pow til about 8500 ft., with spots of the ice layer. Got on snow in the main drainage about 7kft. No trail past the hood, but pretty easy travel on the hiker’s right side of the drainage.

I'mma have to say that Gimpy wins the fat Blue Ribbon "Best In Show" for the thread this season with Wobby and Gnarbro coming in with red ribbon ties.

But that's just my humble opinion.

Looking forward to touring after May 7th and a seriously extended patch-skiing season for sure!

Gimpy's thread MVP status was already confirmed a while ago.

How's the snow today? Are we going straight to slush tomorrow and Friday?

    Threads MVP from today.

About 5 inches of unconsolidated new snow above 8200 on solar aspects at emerald bay but skied pretty good below that. All the chutes had wet slide activity. Did two runs on clean panels over there but lots of folks way to late up there, gonna be a mess out there after today

stayed a bit colder out at the pass today seems like. found pow, corn, superfast not pow that used to be 3" of pow but changed to an inch of hot pow on ice, and a half inch of pow over ice. it was a blast. ran into shakyknees briefly and he and i pretty much had the elephant hump/back/graveyard area to ourselves (plus a few dogs and a coyote)

i did look into the center shot coming in from lookers right. didn't really seem doable since the snowy looking arete you'd have to cross is really an icy wall right now. cornices were fine today when i left but going forward there are some big ones out there to fail in the afternoons for the next few days
