I get 3-4 robo calls a day on the land line at my shop. Most of the time I can tell by caller ID which ones they are. One came through with a Business name. I answer and ask him his name, what the business name is then proceed to tell him I'm reporting him to the DNC registry. Then he laughs and says I didn't give you the real name to my company, laughs says have a nice day then hangs up on me. True enough he gave me a name of a parent company and not who he worked for. Complete condescending asshole, sounded like a honky cracker too.

Spoofing a number should be a major crime in and of itself. No doubt if they're willing to lie about where they are calling from whatever it is they are offering/selling is also not an honest proposition..

'Halloo whoo ees eet? Nobody 'eere but us cheekens' Sometimes I'll hear a chuckle on the other end, sometimes I get a 'fuck you asshole' but most times it's just a quick hang up. The worst part is since I use my cell for business I feel like I need to answer most calls unless it's one that's so obviously a scam or spoofed number.

In addition to the robocalls, I have a phone number that used to belong to Frank Doolittle. My guess is the worthless piece of shit didn't pay his phone bill so he lost the numbers, as he clearly couldn't pay the rest of his bills either. 6 years later and I still get a call every couple months from his creditors.
If anyone knows him, feel free to give him a swift kick in the balls for me.

I got sort of laid off Friday, my contract ended and haven't been assigned a new gig so I'm in the job hunt again for the first time in 12 years. This takes the suckage to a whole new level because I really have to answer calls from unknown numbers now. Up til last week I was just ignoring them if I didn't recognize the number and letting them leave a voice if it was important.

I get calls for a Melissa at work- she has never owned that number unless it was back in the mid 1960's .... The line has been in the business since 1969 and there has never been anyone named Melissa that was ever employed since the business was started and founded. So more major credit bureau mess up probably. The same Credit bureaus that think I am a RShea Jr. and send me offers probably...

About 10 a day on the land line, which my wife insists on keeping "so the relatives" can call. Not sure why they couldn't call our cells, but whatever.
1-2 a day on my cell, with "do not call" registration. Roughly half of those are in Mandarin; I think they have figured out I have a Chinese surname.

Maybe not, I've gotten a bunch of those in the past and my wife was just complaining about it yesterday and our names are definitely not chinese.

^^The problem with answering some of the robocalls is that then the computer that's doing the dialing knows it's an active number and you will get that many more calls. A lot of times if I don't recognize a number and I have to answer it I don't say anything for the first few seconds, if a real person speaks I can then figure out if it's a garbage call or one that I need to deal with.

tl:dr
i answer every call - block 3/7 calls a day, mostly in the 40hr wrkweek - no call blocker database for me
same same as email spam... manage it. 400/800 blocked emails a week - 25000+ blocklibrary
I'm sure a few iT types lurking dwarf these numbers
builtin nuisanceI am not in your hurry

Great 20 minute listen. The reporter successfully pisses off the robocaller by playing stupid and refusing to give up personal info.
Robocaller starts saying hilarious stuff like:
“All right. I want you to just take this MasterCard and shove it up into your candy ass and jump like a fucking frog because we do not work on lesbian cards.”

Blocking the caller does nothing to stop attacks from spoofers who randomly generate a new same area code number to their caller ID for each new call list iteration. My wife had someone call her last week using HER OWN freakin' number. Blocking spoofed numbers only blocks potentially REAL people from being able to call you. The spoofers never call back again using the same spoofed number. They will spoof a number, go through their list then spoof a new number and go through the list again, rinse and repeat..

Yea, I picked that up - up thread... I do get repeated number sequences but, never my own number. The robo shit is mostly voice activated bs
Having investment types, banks, hard money, and IRS frauds plus legitimate cold canvas calls like insurance, solar, who get past my initial sense of smell are a much bigger waste of my time. How many syllables will it take before I thank them for their call and hang up. Very rarely do I get someone who calls back to engage me - rare
comparatively - it's just a nuisance
but by all means, run with the idea of ending this nonsense. Some one's gotta carry the flagI am not in your hurry

Because the SIP or other VoIP protocol they are using does not transmit the originating IP address. And also if you think it is easy to spoof the local caller id for a cellular or similar exchange, then spoofing or blocking the IP addresses can also be done by a good IT tech through things like VPN etc. much easier than the caller id transmission is done.

You can bet if they were transmitting threats against government officials or child porn the authorities would be able to find them and shut them down pretty quickly. Why not require all ISPs to also transmit IP address info encrypted in all VOIP communications? Heck just snapping a cell phone pic comes with all kinds of additional info encrypted in the files now.

sadly at a technical level both phone and email are woefully insecure with respect to sender authenticity verification. much like using a 9digit number as a both unique id and password, we will sooner-than-later need to replace or fix these protocols. but seriously as fun as it is to mock/insult/scream at the robo callers (i have done all three), they’ll just keep calling if you answer. get a call blocker, don’t pick up. report the numbers/times/any voicemail info if you are bored. fcc has/had some online complaint form at some point, too lazy to look it up atm but it’s maybe worth doing
