He was on the Quixote for a couple of years, but I believe this year he was on a pair of FRS. I stand to be corrected as I don't have any attributable source/confirmation for that information, but I heard it somewhere...?

To carbon or not to carbon? I am likely going to order a pair of RXs for a summer build. Enduro core #4 flex. I have a pair of 9D8s, HH core #4 flex no carbon. I very much like the way the 9D8 skis. This makes me think I should stick with the standard build. Thoughts on a carbon RX?

Friday morning surprised us with a bit of fresh in Mammoth so I took out the FRS again for first turns, wildly smile-inducing.

Question for the collective: how does the MAP core in my Protests from a few years ago relate to the current UL/Enduro/Heavy Hitter paradigm?

I fucking love my 192 MAP/Veneer, flex 3s, but am tempted to try a lighter build in a 187 as a dedicated touring ski. Maybe -1 also?

My understanding is that MAP is slightly less damp/robust than Enduro, but that they're very close to each other (Paulonia vs. Aspen, but I don't know if the layup differs between the two).

I just think of Enduro as the new MAP.

Mine understanding as well, paulownia is also a bit lighter but still quite close. AFAIK laid up the same, just aspen in place of the paulownia.

    Thanks guys!

I think a pair of 187 UL Protests are in my future when the spring custom sale gets going. Just need to decide on a graphic, and if I want to go -1 or not...

What does -1 mean? I thought that was just a mounting preference..... not a spec of a custom build

Anybody done a Pompei graphic over veneer? Might be too dark for the wood to pop, but could look cool?

Other options on the short list:

    Powdah Snek White
    Cubes
    Stained Glass Mountains
    Tsunami

And 1 cm shorter. I think the entire ski outline is traced inward 5mm to get the new shape cut.

Id skip the carbon unless it was a touring ski. Veneer costs a bit more than carbon and it saves about the same weight and adds dampness rather than loses it like carbon does. My hh 4 flex rx is nice and itd be even nicer with veneer. Ive been going back and forth and theyre both great and scalpel like but i prefer my gpo.

    Yup.

My thinking on the -1 Protest as a PNW touring ski is that it'll still float pretty well, and should keep most of the awesomeness of the Protest shape in wind effected and/or crusty weirdness, but be easier to manage on the skin track, especially when side hilling, due to the narrower width.

I think but can’t remember if jmars or someone else tried a skinny ProTest for their wife... not sure if there was other feedback.

You may wanna consider a WooTest which has a lot more user experience than a skinny Protest.

Did you miss the entire discussion about the Wootest 1.0 vs 2.0 several years back? I think the Wootest 1.0 was a -15 Protest, but something was off about the geometry when scaling the ski down that much and there were some complaints about the ski hooking up in funky snow, so the tip or something about the sidecut or rocker profile got refined for 2.0. I’m sure I’m off on the specifics, I just remember that the ski was tweaked to update the shape making the skinny size work better.

Thanks. Curious as to length and mount point in each ski? I would go 184 in the RX or 187 in the GPO (given all the additional rocker 182 seems shortish in the GPO, my 9D8s are 185). I have a definite preference for a directional ski. I would also mount -1 or 2 cm on either. What is it about the GPO you prefer? From looking at the charts it would seem given the much shorter camber contact and turn radius that the GPO is more nimble and the RX is better at speed. Any thoughts on which would be a better compliment to my 184 Billy Goats?

Yep, he wants a WooTest - buddy has some 2.0s here, and loves them.

Well, the Wootest isn't on the site anymore, so it might be moot.

I did follow that project a bit though, and the 1.0 was a little more than just a -15mm Protest. IIRC the tail was flatter, and there were some more changes to the overall shape as well. And then the 2.0 got a bit more tail splay than the 1.0, and a lot more tip taper. I guess my thinking is that I know I love the Protest shape, and I think I want this ski to be bigger than the 113 underfoot that the Wootest ended up at. I might just do these full width, still pondering...

Shoot keith an email. He's been super helpful when I've talked to him, there's no one else who knows the skis better. Also I think you can still get old shapes like the wootest if you go custom. Just wait for the spring sale and get them for regular ski price. Sorry if you already know this.

Yeah, Keith's been super helpful in the past for me too. And I wouldn't be surprised if the Wootest was still on offer as a custom, if you ask. That might be the ticket, honestly.

    you should, IMO.
I have a 187 GPO in MAP/Veneer with Shifts, not too heavy and a killer setup. An Enduro or UL +veneer with light tech binders might be a pow touring killer for your neck of the woods.

If anybody wants a lightly used pair of 187 enduro/veneer GPOs mounted -1 with tectons (306bsl) plus mohair skins plus ski crampons let me know. $800 plus shipping for the whole package? Skis are freshly tuned as well. I need to take pics. I’d sell skis and skins flat as well and sell off the binders and cramps separately (after selling the skis). Skis are 8 lbs 15 oz flat. Super versatile but I’ve got setups I reach for first.

Generally, Keith's advice on this is that lighter, brighter colours come out better with veneer. I don't know if you've seen this thread for graphics: https://www.tetongravity.com/forums/...icture-Thread/

Pretty sure the Cubes is on there, looks awesome. Powda snake also looks sick. Have a look at these facebook albums that Keith linked back to when I was trying to figure out which veneer graphic to get (I went with modern graffiti on veneer since you didn't ask, some of the better looking skis I've ever had):
