5-HTP : More notes on self medication to deal with Anxiety or Depression

In the spirit of the thread on CBD and some around the counter mechanisms for detailing some effects of stress, I thought I'd bring up 5-htp.

I've been using it to help smooth out insomnia and to some degree anxiety and stress effects with some success.

Does the collectif have any wisdom or experience to share?

Homocysteine? I knew there was something a bit different about that cysteine molecule.

Doesn't pass the sniff test if you ask me.

I've had pretty bad insomnia and anxiety for the past year and half or more (was a rare week where i had 1 to 2 nights of solid sleep). I reduced my coffee consumption to two cups a day (was easily downing 4 to 6 cups) and cut back the weed big time and I've had amazing results (except now i'm tired all the time, but at least i can nap). Who new coffee causes insomnia and anxiety (duh). Sometimes a simple dietary/habit change can have significant results.

FWIW, I drink about 2 cups of black coffee only before 8:00 am and generally don't indulge in the greenery except at the rare parties I attend or when skiing.
Life, on the other hand is fucking killer right now with a lot of difficult stuff ongoing between managing my dementiaed mom 3000+ miles away and some difficult business issues.

I'm all about managing diet, exercise and intoxicants. Sometimes, contrary to some studies, I find 5-htp to be useful. I thought it was more widely known.

I had heard of it and read a little but then got lost in trying to figure out if 5-HTP, St. John's Wort, SAMe or straight tryptophan was better and kinda gave up. Interesting to hear that you find it useful, there must be others on here who've tried it.

Yeah, there's some Trader Joes pill that has both melatonin and 5-htp and I occasionally use it when I start waking up a few nights in a row. Also used it to adjust to Eurotime Zones and sleep.

Maybe it's a placebo, but it has the desired effect.

    Placebo's a hell of a drug.
