Props for not biting. That being said thats part of the ethos with an emtb. Theyre not about pulling yourself inside out to get that strava time or personal best, for most people, atleast most of the time. Get a good workout, play on the up a little more and more fun on more downs because youll rip the downs(or be safer or both) not having pulled yourself inside out on the climb. Like an mtb but more. Although there are those tech climbs or steep alpine climbs you wouldnt otherwise do that will put you in the red zone but that will be extra fun as well. The E could also stand for extra

I need to go to Utah.
    Utah?
Yeah, Utah. It's wedged in between Wyoming and Nevada. You've seen pictures of it, right?

So after 15 years we finally made it to Utah.....

About to make the plunge into eMTB life and am debating buying from the LBS (pretty much limits me to Trek or Spesh) versus online (ie: Jenson, Evo or similar) or direct (yt, commencal, etc). Obviously direct will yield a nicer suspension/component package than a bike from the LBS (probably looking at a Trek Rail 9.7 or Spesh Levo Comp Alloy if I go the LBS route), but I’m wondering if having the support of the LBS for potential tech/motor/warranty issues offsets the gains of buying direct. I’m pretty competent with bike maintenance, but dealing with the motor seem like it could be a whole other can of worms. Thoughts?

I had issues with the motor as it turned out the firmware needed updating which is just a DL thru my phone so no dealer involved,

dealers don't necessarily know anything about E bikes or computers and make no mistake an E-bikes is a computer with 2 wheels

another guy in town had a motor failure in only 6 rides, he had to find a dealer to fix it in another town, I know it was a hassle for the dealer and the owner of the bike

Both spesh and trek havd been 2 of the better companies taking care of customers ebikes. That wasnt alwayds the case with them with mtb's. Id prefer the trek rail with the bosch motor. Id say the lowest model with the 750w battery smart system would ve the way to go. New rail is pretty sweet. Lots of people adding 10 mm to the fork and a longer stroke coil out back for a 156r/170f bike. Flip chip makes it ez to mullet if thats your jam as well. LBS will most likely come in handy at some point, whether warrantee, update or service. Bike shops have been able go get parts for bosch in most cases(wires, sensors, controllers may break in crashes).
Scott and giant gave really well priced options at bike stores also

Joined the e-bike crowd this weekend. $11 out of pocket thanks to TABOR tax refunds + Denver incentives.

Have to say, it's a riot and I can understand why it's a total game changer for a bunch of commuters. Brought home 4 bags of groceries and still had room for picking up a bunch of shit from the hardware store on the way home.

Bought based on a friends positive experience. They've had it for ~18months and have used it to drop the kid at childcare everyday since then plus lots of recreational rides around the metro with us.

I see a lot of RAD bikes esp as commuters. I’ve been told that RAD unfortunately is one of the brands using white label mystery batteries from
China (as opposed to UL certified from brands like Panasonic) so apparently it’s considered prudent to only charge in a shed or detached garage you don’t mind losing in a fire.

    Anyone know for sure?

so what happened was buddy with the brand name real E mtn bike that died after 6 rides had bought his bike in Vangroovy, the local dealer in town for that brand didnt really want to work on it so buddy took it to a dealer for that brand in another town who did fix it . SO while the motor was under warranty BUT there was no way for the other dealer to charge back the Wanking about to the motor mfger so buddy got hit with a rather large bill just for the wanking on a bike he hadnt even ridden, not fair to buddy or the shop who fixed it really

I think the Wanking would have been free if Buddy had bought the bike in town from the local dealer just regular warranty stuff

Ptetty shit brand then. Motor dies the motor company replaces it. The brand can/should help facilitate that if needed. Motor company covers everything except the wrenching. Brand covers the wrenching charge. Yt got it done for me after shitmano dropped the ball. Yt paid for any wrenching and made sure i had a free shipping tag. Gave me a call later to make sure it was ok. Yt usa where great. Had a few phone calls with ^Shaun". Nice guy. Ez chat

It sounded like buddy bought the bike from the distributor, the big brand did not cover the wrenching on a non LBS sale, while YT does nothing but remote sales which may have been in your favor, in any case play it Leo asked so its what really happened

Copy that. I guess tge take away between arecposts is the lack of service consistency. It can vary widely but i think its coming togethrr and adjusting to the addition of more issues to potentially/probably service.

exactly ^^ it was easy when all the distributor had to deal with is acoustic bikes cuz its mechanical you can usually see what the problem is and fix it with some parts you got on hand

now you got motor mfgers who may or may not understand wtf it is they are doing and what they are doing is selling/ servicing a computer, if that sounds silly to you look in e-tube where you can see your E bike has 5 pieces of firmware ( make sure they are latest level)

There would have/ should have been tech bulletins from Shimano telling users and dealers to update their computers but I never seen anything and neither did my dealer ( who is good) from stuff I read on-line it sounded like some motors got sent back for firmware issues, the good/ latest firmware came along last december, nobody said "the old firmware was fucked so I load this" in june I happen to notice the firmware had again changed I diagnosed and fixed myself something that should have been covered by a notice to update firmware

No, I’d say the larger conversation that article ties into is very relevant this thread. It relates to the choice of owning and using an e-bike in society and the fact that you shouldn’t just do whatever you want “because it’s just a bike.”

We have a big e-cargo bike and that thinking and consideration is relevant to me as much as it is to kooks in Cali

you don't need an e-bike to just do whatever you want, there would be more traction in the why I hate e-bikes thread

Shimano has a communication problem no doubt. They have for years basically manufactured in a bubble. Shimano canada takes it another step. During the 4 months they had been aware of the problem they wouldnt even return a call to the lbs. It took yt to step in and get things moving. Yt did everything. No word from shimano. The whole time i was concerned i still hadnt recieved an ra#. I thought there was a good chance after a few months id still be at the back of the line until i got an ra# and worked thru the line w that.
All the while my ex moto trials competitor/bike destroyer was busting displays and mode selectors and getting bosch parts in a day or 2 hardly missing a ride. Similar with a giant/yamaha buddeh, although his motor internal gear exploded after warranty and he had to buy new. He can send that motor to a select few repair services and get the yamaha rebuilt though. Shimano goes in the garbage at tthat point. New yamaha is sweet, although they did have that firmware update glitch thing u mention. Fixed and people/shops are aware now though. I think the bosch and yamaha you update at home though

I think a large street E-bike with a cargo rack would be tits and maybe its time to change the title of this to "E-bikes, the Tech thread", not "E-bikes I will do what I waaaaaaant cause I am an asshole thread".

you don't need an e-bike to just do whatever you want, there would be more traction in the why I hate e-bikes thread
Not like this is your thread in the 1st place.
